@lifelearner47 Worth noting what they got for those "64 5-meter-tall, 150-metric-ton waste canisters"

ZION-1 "Electricity Supplied" 124.41 TWh pris.iaea.org/PRIS/CountrySt…
ZION-2 124.50 TWh pris.iaea.org/PRIS/CountrySt…

Total = 248.91 TWh (248.91 Billion kWh) electricity
@lifelearner47 ...and how much coal or gas they avoided burning by using nuclear.
@lifelearner47 Given that Zion closed in 1998, the emissions avoided would have been from coal back then.
@lifelearner47 Zion was in Illinois; looking at EIA.gov data, Illinois in 2001 used 45.73 million short tons (41.49 M tonnes) of coal to generate 29.12 TWh electricity...
@lifelearner47 248.91 TWh would thus represent...

354.6 M tonnes of coal (!!!)
@lifelearner47 Now, assuming a density of 800 kg/m^3...

That's 443 M m^3...

That's a cube of coal 0.443 km on a side.
X_X
That would have been burned and sent up into the atmosphere as CO2, plus some other (noxious) stuff.

Please check my math and compare to your sources...
@lifelearner47 But if you compare the climate disaster that burning *a half km cube of coal* represents (not to mention the issues from local air pollution) vs those few dozen casks sitting on a pad...
@lifelearner47 Even if I'm off by a bit, the scale of operations i.e. this one in Germany suggests it's probably the correct order of magnitude anyway ^^;
