tonight’s albemarle county school board meeting will not include any (sanctioned) public comment. the last meeting was dispersed by police after being called off during the first public comment.
members of @hatefreeacps and a great showing of other community members are here for the meeting, which starts shortly.
i wonder if school board member jason buyaki will be wearing another confederate flag tie tonight?

forget apple pie — there’s nothing more american than an armed police presence at a school board meeting in response to parents objecting to racist policies that harm children of color.
the school board motions to move into open session after their closed session, reading the standard disclaimer that the closed session didn’t violate the open meetings act. weird, last time they claimed that didn’t apply to them?
kate acuff, school board chair, wants to address some “misunderstandings” about the school board’s work on the dress code policy @hatefreeacps wants addressed. she says the ask doesn’t meet legal standards, which is objectively false.
the board hopes to have town halls to gather input from the community on the issue. she says they’ve also met with their legal counsel & law enforcement about “how to best avoid” the actions that “lead to the board not being able conduct its business” last time
acuff continues, citing policy on ejection from meetings & legal consequences for refusal to leave. she’s threatening any violators with physical removal and prosecution.
“we encourage public comment in an appropriate and dignified way,” she says, to some scoffing from the gallery.
community members, including @hatefreeacps, are having a demonstration OUTSIDE of this meeting. their meeting sounds like more fun... i can hear it from here in the auditorium ❤️
a board member is recounting the history of the request to amend the policy on hate symbols in schools. the amended policy addresses the matter as a “learning opportunity” and has no enforcement guidelines.
they’re recommending putting off any action on this policy until they have finalized a new antiracism policy. they’re looking into solutions like apps to allow students to “more comfortably report” race based incidents.
apps to solve racism. instead of just banning racist shirts
i’m sorry, is that albemarle county commonwealth’s attorney robert tracci conversing with an officer in the back of this school board meeting? they know the prosecutor’s role in the process of persecuting antiracists comes LATER, right?
we’re watching a presentation about custodial services and installation of low flow toilets here in lane auditorium, but i can hear the @hatefreeacps rally going on outside. this community is powerful ❤️
the officers in the back of the auditorium both have their radios held to their ears, looking antsy and ready to act. the rally outside is chanting “racists must resign.”
a small group of community members have risen from their seats here in the auditorium in silent protest.

chants of “let her go” from the hallway tell me there’s been an arrest.
a message for the albemarle county school board
i’m in the hallway now. the man they have handcuffed on the ground needs an ambulance.
at least two arrests - one outside the meeting and one inside. all because the albemarle county school board is too racist to even sit with the idea that racist symbols might be hurting children.
sorry, that’s five arrests. four outside the meeting and one inside. three people had already been taken away by the time i got out into the hallway.

at a school board meeting.
standing outside, i saw several police vehicles arrive and officers, one with his baton already in hand, sprinted into the building.
sounds like there were six arrests, one person has already been released?
i’m outside the jail now with other community members to do jail support. the arrestees have not yet been transported here.
our comrades are going to need funds for their legal defense. at least six people were arrested tonight at a SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. please donate to @CvilleFund.

oh look, it’s anthony! the guy who, at a council meeting a few months ago, recommended running over homeless people.
he’s here at the magistrate’s office trying to intimidate people here for jail support.
he’s back in his truck in the jail parking lot. he told me, “yeah i’m drunk. i drink all day,” as he staggered back into the cab.
daylight photos are from the courthouse parking lot during james alex fields’ hearing this afternoon.
he just drove away. drunk. cops don’t care.
our local drunk angry racist has been following activists around for months.

the first arrestee from tonight’s albemarle county school board meeting has been released. she says there are four more inside the jail and one arrestee is in the hospital.

please donate to @CvilleFund for their legal expenses.

one more arrestee out! still waiting on three more. at least two dozen community members out here standing in the rain waiting for our comrades 🖤
one more out! two more still in the jail. word is the arrestee taken to the hospital has also been released on a summons.
don’t forget to donate to @CvilleFund

supporting our comrade currently being processed by the magistrate.
one more out & the last one is being processed! ❤️✊
after three hours here at the jail, our final comrade has just been released! loud cheering from the crowd here in the parking lot, much hugging and rejoicing ❤️
time to go home, get some rest, and keep fighting.
