For MLK’s funeral, national leaders from both parties came to Atlanta to honor him.

Nearby, Governor Lester Maddox — a segregationist who had used his opposition to civil rights to win his position — hid inside his office, peeking out at the crowds through the closed blinds.
Watching the news now, I just thought of this moment this morning, for no reason at all.

Here’s a thought experiment:

Imagine if Obama hadn’t gotten the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010, even with Democrats in full control of Congress.

Imagine if Obama then made the ACA the central focus in the midterms, but Dems lost 40 seats and control of the House anyway.
Then imagine he demanded billions to fund it anyway, even though Congress and voters had just rejected the idea.

Imagine if Obama then shut down the government when Boehner and the Tea Party Republicans refused to fund it too.
Now imagine that, weeks into a government shutdown of his own making, Obama then said he was thinking about declaring a national emergency to fund it anyway, and that as president he had the right to do that whenever Congress refused to do what he wanted.

The Southern labor movement has a long, successful, & noisy history.

The reason you don't hear about it? It doesn't fit the image of the South as backwards & obedient to its masters. Labor activism has been sold as all about white guys in northern factories and it's just NOT.
Textile mills in NC were the site of some of the largest strikes in US history.

Loray Mills in 1929: strikes fizzled after key organizers were murdered. But they set the stage for ramped-up labor activism & victories across the entire US. You're welcome!

I am adding a long thread of stuff to this essay by @HeerJeet on National Review and William F. Buckley's relationship with race, especially around the early 1960s.
On April 4, 1965, William Buckley addressed a prayer breakfast for Catholic police officers. The press reported that “more than 5,600 New York policemen clapped and cheered” as Buckley praised the “‘restraint’ of the police in Selma.”
Criticized for this, Buckley called his lawyer. He said although he criticized an anti-police tendency, he said he “spoke sympathetically of the plight of Negroes in the South” and “deplored the violence in the South and the attitude of lackadaisical white Southerners toward it.”

Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu for 5 separate terms between 1969 and 2011, passed away on Aug 7th at the age of 94.

He was the most major and consequential face of the “Dravidian movement” since Annadurai’s death in 1969
A lot of obituaries will no doubt focus on his political career and his legacy. But in my view this is a good time to take a step back and better understand the “ideas” and prejudices that Karunanidhi championed.

"Views" that predate him by decades and that he did not originate
While it is all very well to focus on people, a discussion of ideas and their place in history is always more useful.

Reading a forthcoming book called Hitler's American Friends.

It's about the America First Committee and will probably be a worthwhile read when it comes out.

There was a lot of infighting about tone -- think alt-lite vs. alt right.
People like Charles Lindbergh were the ones who drummed up the most support for the movement. Because of their openly anti-Semitic views.

There was apparently a lot of fighting between people like Lindbergh & people who thought they should promote fascism with a friendlier tone
And there was a disinformation campaign. Apparently Americans were told that Roosevelt was secretly Jewish and had changed his name from "Rosenfeld." Wow. I did not know this.

As of August 2017, the Artist's Union England determines the following hourly rates for an artist to be fair; £21.04 p/hr for a new graduate artist. That's about $28 dollars for my US friends. This goes up to £27.27 p/hr for 3 yrs+ exp, and £31.47 per hour for 5 years or more. /2
If you are doing sessional/daily rates such as presentations, consultations and installations. You should be looking at £166.24 p/day (£ 83.12 p/ 1⁄2 day) for a new grad artist, £218.19 p/day (£109.10 p/ 1⁄2 day) 3 yrs+ exp, £270.14 p/day (£135.07 p/ 1⁄2 day) 5 yrs+ exp. /3
