Republican Rep Paul Cronin doomed re-elect campaign in ‘74 when I was a freshman in college and volunteering. He was beaten by Paul Tsongas whom @JohnKerry chose not to contest for nomination but whom he would succeed in Senate. Lots of odd coincidences in memoir e.g. Bob Mueller
prosecuting #BCCI, Paul Manafort and Roger Stone representing Marcos when Kerry was helping Reagan —yeah you read that right— oust the dictator. Of course we don’t agree on much but many details worth reviewing. Transcript of interview will post later.

From one of military buddies: "A couple points to consider about the Chang'i 4 landing. One, China's space program is controlled by the Party and by their military. There is no civilian aspect to it.
Second, the southern and norther poles of the moon are critical for a number of reasons. One is that there is water there in the form of ice in the permanent shadow of deep craters. This water will be important for building permanent bases on the moon.
Third, the poles are important military positions because there are places at the poles that can always look down on the earth with sensors and weapons. China's landing at the southern pole at the Aiken Basin is a key military strategic achievement.

I think it is significant that Mueller is agreeing to narrow the questions to Trump to focus on Russia conspiracy, rather than obstruction. It suggests Mueller thinks that's more significant and worthwhile at this stage. (I agree with @emptywheel.) 1/ cnn.com/2018/10/11/pol…
2/ It's surely not because he has concluded that a president cannot obstruct justice. It hints at the opposite: He probably has sufficient evidence for obstruction. If forced to allocate his time to obstruction or Russia, he is choosing Russia. And probably b/c he has big leads.
3/ Here is @emptywheel, who has been making this point for a while. Her take is that White House insiders have actively been trying to distract the media by focusing on obstruction, when the real danger has been Russia/Flynn:

What follows is a thread (rant) detailing one of the most frustrating yet fun experiences that I’ve had reading and ultimately commenting on a scientific paper. The original paper was published in TiCS, perhaps the top journal in cognitive science, by Melnikoff & Bargh (M&B).
The paper, “Mythical Number Two”, criticizes dual-process theory (DPT). sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

They review evidence that some of the features commonly associated with DPT don’t align (e.g., there are cases where cognitive processing is both unconscious and intentional).
M&B correctly argue that just because some features have been associated with “Type 1” or “Type 2” processes in DPT does not mean that we should assume they are perfectly correlated. This is an excellent point & people who apply DPT should be more careful with their terminology.

The hearing is now officially starting, with opening remarks from the ranking members of both committees (Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee).
In her opening remarks, Sen. Feinstein mentions last night's news that Cambridge Analytica had access to Facebook users' private direct messages.
I hope someone asks Zuckerberg how Facebook can claim they didn't know Cambridge Analytica was still using data they harvested, given that FB sent employees to "embed" w/ the Trump campaign's digital team — so FB employees were working in the same office as Cambridge Analytica.
