This is 6-year-old Omar Faisal. He has just recovered from a bout of pneumonia. And today, June 20, #WorldRefugeeDay he is returning to the plastic and bamboo home he shares with his #Rohingya parents & siblings in one of the world's largest refugee camps - in #Bangladesh
He is very happy as you can see from his pic.
Omar has a big challenge in front of him. Children with his condition, hydrocephaly, do not fare well if not treated early. Luckily, Omar can still talk ( he talks a lot!) and still has his sight. #WorldRefugeeDay
In #Myanmar, there was no opportunity for Omar to seek medical help. His parents even traveled to #Bangladesh when he was one but were thwarted by the large fee demanded by the hospital. Now Omar & his family are #refugees after the #Rohingya crisis of 2017. #WorldRefugeeDay

I watched the entire proceedings of #OICMakkahSummit for about 8 hrs, and live tweeted at @Office_AQPk interesting tidbits & observations. Here's some observations on PM #ImranKhan's speech. /1

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
PM #Pakistan #ImranKhan was well received at #OICMakkahSummit. #MBS, King of #Bahrain, Pres of #Iraq, PM #Bangladesh, informally interacted with him. #Saudi hosts opened doors at holy sites for only two leaders this time: President Al-Sisi of #Egypt & PM Khan of Pakistan. /2
PM #ImranKhan speech was among the long ones at #OICMakkahSummit. It was extempore. Many Muslim leaders didn't get to speak due to paucity of time. Immediately after PM's speech, Secretariat asked leaders to keep remarks short. PM's speech was among the well delivered speeches./3

India (Bhārat), aka Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya) constitutes a mosaic of paradoxes and contradictions starting with the existence of gigantic socio-economic disparities which are in sharp contrast with the spectacular technological development in most productive sectors.
Such contradictions reflect significant measurement discrepancies which, in India's case, could be on the order of hundreds of millions of people.
Furthermore, there is the problem of Islamic terrorists, who are trained abroad and find easy fuel in the contradictions within it.
Finally, there’s agriculture which, by some estimates, accounts for 90% of India’s water consumption. Farmers meet irrigation demands by indiscriminately extracting groundwater, which some say accounts for a quarter of the world’s groundwater usage.

#SupplyChains #India needs to work indipendently with #USA and #China to separate the supply chains headed in the two directions and try to shift as much of them as possible to India
3/n #SupplyChains This is the final opportunity for making India a manufacturing hub, & bring manufacture jobs to India. It would be tragic if we miss this opportunity. I suggest that the new Govt appoint a #MOS(Supply Chains)in @PMOIndia to attract Global supply chains to India.

1/ It's fair to say @UNPeacekeeping🇺🇳 is currently in a financial crisis caused largely but not solely by the 🇺🇸 Trump administration. Here's a thread explaining the state of play undocs.org/a/73/809
2/ First a caveat: the numbers fluctuate regularly so what follows are just snapshots. @UNPeacekeeping & its troop- & police-contributing countries (T/PCCs) are reimbursed after the fact. Here's an explainer of how it works via @ipinstGO theglobalobservatory.org/2018/10/in-us-…
3/ When UN Member States don't pay their @UNPeacekeeping dues in full and on-time it hurts 1) T/PCCs; 2) mission effectiveness in the field; and 3) the reputation of the UN's🇺🇳 general effective system for financing #PeaceOperations.

1. Massive investment in tubewells in #Bangladesh (incl by World Bank) is considered the poster child of development gone wrong (eg in West Wing) b/c many of the wells contained natural arsenic.

2. Diarrhea is 2nd largest killer of children <5. High population density and flooding make Bangladesh highly vulnerable. In 1970-90s, 8.6 million wells were dug in Bangladesh and 94% rural population moved to clean water sources. Massive achievement until arsenic was discovered.
3. Naturally occurring arsenic was found in many wells with 15% pop in great danger ie drinking water >50ppb arsenic. Big campaign in 1998/2000 to test & paint red contaminated wells. Very high compliance: noone wanted to drink arsenic. But shutting down wells came at a cost...

@EricHolder has asked an important question:

#When was #America #ever #great?

I realize that there is a nearly unavoidable tendency to snort and spew one's coffee when they hear or read his question for the first time. But, honestly, isn't it worth the exercise to answer it?
So, @EricHolder, I'm going to do just that, and I'm going to ask my ragtag bag of followers and detractors to contribute as well.

I'm going to offer my evidence of moments of American greatness. And I'm going to ask those that read this thread to do the same.
But wait!

There's more!

I'm going to ask my detractors and antagonists (are you seeing this @fedupaton) to contribute as well, and will welcome from them both moments of greatness and moments of shame.

Shamima Begum has had her UK citizenship revoked by the British government.

Do you support this decision? 👇

@akhbar
Would #Bangladesh accept to take Shamima Begum?

She was radicalized afterall in the UK.
Is it true to say that many of you are against taking Western ISIS members back home to the West is the fear that they will be free soon since prison sentences are not high? Is that your main worry?

@Guardian frontpage article today implies that sourcing clothes from Bangladeshi factories is morally wrong. theguardian.com/world/2019/jan…. This is a deeply problematic. These factories give income to millions of poor people. I worked for years with these factories. Long THREAD 1/37
Background: Bangladesh is second largest garment exporter in the world, after China. Ca. 4000 factories produce for export, with 4M workers, ca. 3M female. Factories vary from damp poorly lit shacks with few dozen workers to vast modern complexes with 10,000s workers. 2/37
Every major clothing brand in the world sources garments there, from exactly the kind of factories described in the article. If you are outraged over the Spice Girls from this article, you need to be outraged over EVERY large Western cloth retailer. But should you? 3/37

Aaaand it's takedown time in #Bangladesh too.

@Twitter and @Facebook both just announced takedowns of a small number of inauthentic assets, possibly tied to state actors.

Some initial analysis with the great @karankanishk here, for @DFRLab:

medium.com/@DFRLab/electi…
Here's @TwitterSafety's take on it: a small number of assets, possibly state-linked.

15 accounts so far, low follower numbers, engaged in coordinated platform manipulation.

And here's @fbnewsroom: six accounts, nine pages. Taken down for coordinated inauthentic behaviour, i.e. a network of counterfeit accounts.

"Linked to individuals associated with the #Bangladesh government."

48 years since #Bangladesh was liberated. Happy #VictoryDay to my Bagladeshi friends.

Samr thing is celebtated in India as #VijayDiwas to commemorate victory in the #1971War
As the #LiberationWar was reaching its inevitable conclusion, #Pakistani forces went on a killing spree in #Dhaka.

Hundred’s of intellectuals- profs, journalists, docs, artists & engineers were blindfolded & later executed en masse.
#Bangladesh
My #Bangladeshi friend equated it to damaging an unborn child's brain just before its birth.
Rampant anti-intellectualism in the age of Trump & Modi, anti-science policies, murder of rationalists etc makes this chapter of Bangladeshi history so relevant.

These Moroccan coins feature the so-called Seal of Solomon, often depicted as a hexagram, similar to the Star of David. The coins are dated respectively 1271 A.H. (1855) and 1290 A.H. (1873/4), minted by king 'Abd al-Raḥmān and his successor, Muḥammad IV of #Morocco.
The Seal of Solomon is the signet ring attributed to the Abrahamic king/prophet Solomon. It is said that Solomon used this ring to control the spirits and animals. The design as a hexagram is often depicted on medieval #Islamic banners, coins, drinking-cups or in mosques.
According to the Catalan Atlas (1375), the two Anatolian beyliks of respectively Karaman and Candar featured a Seal of Solomon on their flags. The symbol was popular among the Turkish beyliks, and was later used by the #Ottomans in their mosque decorations.
