This article works really hard to imply, without directly saying, that Feinstein is sitting on a letter that implicates Kavanaugh in a sexual harassment or assault scandal from his youth. theintercept.com/2018/09/12/bre…
"Different sources provided different accounts of the contents of the letter…but the one consistent theme was that it describes an incident involving Kavanaugh and a woman while they were in high school."
"The woman who is the subject of the letter is now being represented by Debra Katz, a whistleblower attorney who works with #MeToo survivors."
I have no idea what the hell to make of any of this. It's a really strangely written and framed piece.
Katz's website says she works on "employment discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge, Sarbanes-Oxley, corporate, environmental and other whistleblower retaliation claims, SEC whistleblower tips, and contractual employment disputes," BTW.
Shorter this article: "There may or may not be a letter that tells a story, which may or may not be true and may or may not be about sexual misconduct, which Feinstein may or may not be withholding from other senators, for reasons which we're not even willing to speculate about."
Me to the author of that piece:
Quote from screenplay of All the President's Men in which Bradlee tells W&D their article isn't nailed down.
Followup article from Buzzfeed. The letter has been referred to the FBI, and Feinstein says she'll make a statement later today. buzzfeednews.com/article/lissan…
Update: Feinstein says the letter-writer doesn't want to go public or "press the matter further," and she's keeping the letter private out of respect for that request.
More: The NYT now has two sources saying the letter pertains to "possible sexual misconduct between Judge Kavanaugh and a woman when they were both in high school." nytimes.com/2018/09/13/us/…
Language is a little clunky, but the Times also appears to say that the letter was written by the alleged target of Kavanaugh's misconduct, not by a third party. That's a big detail absent from both the Buzzfeed and Intercept stories.
Here's the language from the piece: "a person familiar with the letter confirmed" that it "included [an] allegation of sexual misconduct toward the letter’s author."
