Serena Williams said women were punished more than men in tennis matches & blamed sexism for why it happened. The sports media spread this claim as truth & cheered her for saying it. Turns out twenty years of tennis data shows men are penalized far more often. Data via @nytimes
Fascinating: women (and men) could easily use this data to praise women for better court behavior over past 20 years. Instead those defending Serena are still arguing women are discriminated against based on sex even though data disproves it. Why such a desire to be a victim?
This leads me to a fascinating question I’ve been thinking about a great deal lately: why is there such a desire in modern American society to be a victim? For most of American history we all strove not to be the victims of our stories. Not now. What changed? And when? And why?
Not to go all post-grad working on his PHD thesis for you here either, but what Serena is arguing is she wants to be treated like a man. Which is actually an argument that male standards are ideal & women should aspire to emulate them. Her argument is based on male superiority.
