A recent study in @nature couldn't replicate drastic CO2 effects on coral reef #fish behaviour & empirically found no effect of #oceanacidification

Our #metaanalysis of the past decade on this topic concurs

Breakdown thread👇
We demonstrate one of the most striking examples of the #DeclineEffect in #ecology to date, w/ reported effects of OA on fish behaviour all but disappearing over past decade

If you’ve never heard of the #DeclineEffect see:
Qualitatively the number of studies reporting “strong” effects of #oceanacidification on fish behaviour have plummeted over time

Women are 57% of PhD pool. But look how we drop out in leadership. Need for better inclusion. @NIEHS Council Meeting
NAEHS Council addressing funding gap for Black researchers. So important to show the data. There is good news for closing disparity for K awards - 2013 vs 2018.
Improvement for R01s but still a 10% lower funding rate for Black researchers. More progress is needed. How can we do this?

#Bias of Conditioned Mind

Animals evolve over millions of yrs trying to make sense of millions of bits of info being bombarded to their brain every second!

More data is invaluable for long term learning but minuscule amount of data in that heap is critical for life & death.
So there is immense need to prioritize data input.
We learn to focus on what is of immediate concern & ignore which can be dealt with later.
Not to mention, large amount of data thrown to our mind/ brain by our sense organs, each moment, may not be discernible for any good use.
To bypass this complex challenge, mind has evolved to simplify.
"Real" outside data is presented to & is churned by immense brain power every moment into oversimplified schemes.
We learn to "understand" complex data into artificial, arbitrary, contrived & oversimplified rules.

Posting some reflections on the #ACTT & #RECOVERY trials related to #remdesivir & #dexamethasone for the treatment of #COVID19

Those results feel like definitive advances, but we need to realize their limitations and need for confirmation despite everyone's #pandemic fatigue

1/ Image
There are lot of skeptics in and outside of #Twitter on the results of both trials, strong emotions regarding big-pharma made medications, the way the #EUA was made, also about use of #steroids in the #ICU that has a quite rocky history among those who run those units.
And we need to acknowledge from the outset all sorts of basic, and not so basic, emotions that come in the doing clinical trials, exacerbated by academic cliques, national defense issues (and nationalisms) that can get exacerbated with the strains in health systems. Image

Ready or Not... We're LIVE with @dessalen in the first of our new #TeVE series. Today we're talking about "Getting it Wrong: What Every Leader Wants to Avoid" 😣. Follow along #TeVirtualEvents #BringPeopleTogether
Outdated conversations can lead to old ways of thinking and aren't in line with #virtualleadership in current times. Great #leadership starts with self-awareness! Self awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence 💜 #TeVE #TeVirtualEvents #BringPeopleTogether
Making people aware of #bias doesn't mean there will be action seen. They aren't necessarily connected. Awareness doesn't have much value to your team without actions.

@ylecun "Turing award winner" & @timnitGebru, groundbreaking researcher of #AI #bias, #facialrecognition, faced off on how a #machinelearning system could make pics like Obama's pixelated face into a white person. @ruchowdh @mutalenkonde @kharijohnson @mer__edith @miaD 1/
Yann states it's the data. Seems reasonable. Oversimplified. But @timnitgebru pts out there's more going on behind the scenes to get us to this point - more systemic issues beyond just the data that need to be acknowledged. @mutalenkonde @kharijohnson @sethcolaner @mer__edith 2/
Give it deeper thought. Question deeper how we got here... to a publicly available way to take pixelated faces and make them whole based on data that is majority white faces. @timnitgebru @mutalenkonde @kharijohnson @ruchowdh @mer__edith 3/

How relevant is a tiny speck of dust, in a room where it makes up about 0.0003% of the total weight of the "things" in the room, taken together?

An odd thought. Right?
The ratio of mass of earth to that of the total solar system is 1 against 333345.997.

But why am I even saying all this?
We live in a strange pale blue dot. A world where the single most intelligent species decided that its a brilliant idea to be up in arms against each other.
Here you can die simply because of being yourself.

So grateful that @javeedsukhera accepted my invitation to speak on #bias #implicitbias #oppression to @MacAnesthesia

Live tweeting some pearls!

Stigma has a negative impact on clinical outcomes
Shame is not an effective pedagogic strategy in calling out stigma. Shaming and calling out may actually make problem worse

Education may be helpful but it also isn’t enough alone
We often have conversations about #equity that are blaming (“us” vs. “them”)

Blame has an inverse relationship with accountability

It’s an interesting approach at @MITSloanFellows - placed into teams rather than allowed to select own team. The teams are formed so there is likely to be misalignment and conflict. And then we have to work together for grades. We cannot do usual bonding activities via Zoom
Teams are being coached & cautioned that it is easy to create “in” and “out” groups to exclude, marginalize, label some in group. Instead, keep open communication and pause prior to forming any conclusion.…
“Identify where on ladder you are.

Are you:
-Selecting your data or reality?
-Interpreting what it means?
-Making or testing assumptions?
-Forming or testing conclusions?
-Deciding what to do and why?”

Vet, verify, listen, consider

(This seems especially relevant for biases)

External Professor @DaniSBassett (@Penn) on addressing #inequity in the scientific community caused by #bias in #citation practices—focusing on the evidence of a growing #gender imbalance in the reference lists of #neuroscience research.…
The proportion of #neuroscience papers with woman first or last authors grew from 1995 to 2018, but the undercitation of female authors actually *increased* in that time.

SFI's @DaniSBassett (@Penn) on #gender #inequity in the scientific community:
Undercitation of #neuroscience research with first or last woman authors appears to be driven predominantly by the reference lists of papers written by male-male teams.

This is not to say, however, that all men undercite women, or that women do not also undercite women:

The gender biased #AppleCard credit decision is a fascinating example of how algorithmic credit decisions can enter choppy waters
Even more fascinating is Goldman’s response. They can’t identify the reason there was such a difference in credit limits but they are sure that decisions are not based on “factors like gender”
In fact, they have no way of guaranteeing that. The fact they exclude protected characteristics or “do not know your gender or marital status” does not mean these factors were not used. These are #AIFalseDreams

1/ So, today was a big day for @DrJRMarcelin and I. We've been developing curricula on "Structural Challenges & Inequities in Healthcare Delivery" for the @UNMCCOM M1 students as part of the Health Systems Science coil.

Thread on this #MedEd project + today's capstone 👇🏾
2/ With inspiration from @JonathanMetzl & Dr. Helena Hanson's work on #StructuralCompetency, we wanted to assemble a pilot set of experiences that would give @UNMC students a glimpse into local health inequities, from historical & community perspectives:
3/ We gave the M1s several introductory lectures & assignments focused on big-picture issues like #SDoH & disparities, creating a "structural DDx" for patients, unconscious #bias & #microaggressions, developing structural humility, and #racism in medicine...

Have I ever told y’all how much I loooove to give #feedback?

Here’s why:
1. It adds meaning to my work in #MedEd.
2. It honors the learners and the patients.
3. It informs my final evaluations.
4. It improves the learning climate.
5. It's necessary.

*Shout out to #2.
I know lots of experts have written and presented great stuff on this. But if #medtwitter has taught me nothing else, it's that we can always add new ways to look at stuff.

So with that, here’s my practical approach to feedback on the wards and in clinic. Ready?
Okay, so 1st, let’s quickly revisit how feedback was defined in Ende’s classic paper:

“an informed, nonevaluative, objective appraisal of performance intended to improve clinical skills”

(Ende J. Feedback in clinical medical education. JAMA. 1983;250:777–781)

Cool? Cool.
