I decided to install windows 10 on an old laptop since OSX is frustrating recently. trying to install and play minesweeper was a little microcosm of so much that's wrong with computing today.
first, it doesn't come pre-installed, you have to search for it in through microsoft app store and download. fine, nothing wrong with that.

but the download starts and its almost 200MB. 🤔 maybe they added some sweet textures
download completes. when you open the app you see this a popup asking you to sign in to a MS account, ostensibly to share a high score, more likely just because they really want you to sign in. Win 10 is maybe the thirstiest of all time in this regard
close that and look at the dashboard. what a monstrosity. complete with an ad unit right in the middle. this doesn't just show MS ads, anything is fair game. Pay $10 to remove and get the ad-free minesweeper experience.
start the game: it got a makeover and some cool sound effects. alright.

finish: more ads!
it wasn't until i played a few games that a FULL SCREEN VIDEO AD popped up!

look at that glory. i wonder whose job it was to sell this spot
oh and as an added bonus they also put ads in solitaire. if only i needed a new psoriasis medication
i know i'm late to this party, but just found this very surprising (the video ads especially). it feels like most software is no longer deployed to empower the individuals using it, and that is really sad.

maybe the worst part of this whole thing was that I removed Linux and replaced it with this windows install.

The Microsoft article on how to do this, updated in 2017, unflinchingly suggests that one should have a floppy disk on hand
okay, angry techie rant is over, back to regularly scheduled data vis-adjacent content. also none of you probably know who I am, since, new avi 🤣

I called my mom yesterday. I wanted to see if she knew anything about this place. She said I've actually been here before, when I was really young. I don't remember any of that.
I tried to ask her again why she never got along with my grandfather but she's so cagey about it. She grew up in a town nearby, and my grandfather didn't move into this house until after my mom left for school. I guess she never really came back.
We talked for a little bit, but my reception here is spotty. She asked me if there's still wine in the cellar and I told her there wasn't a cellar, but she said there is. Down in the basement, off to a corner. After she hung up I went downstairs to look, and she was right.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
