Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld have an outsized role in feeding Yale law students into prestigious federal clerkships, and are also troubled by the threat of tribalism. It seems like those warning about the threat of tribalism never recognize their own tribes. theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
Chua and Rubenfeld are members of the most influential tribe in the country, (along with Brett Kavanaugh) a tribe that spends a lot of time worrying about other tribes. See also Haidt & Lukanoff's "The Coddling of the American Mind."
As I say in my essay on The Coddling of the American Mind, Haidt & Lukianoff worry about students who ask/demand that places like Yale make a "home" for them, arguing that we shouldn't see those places as akin to homes, overlooking that they already feel very much at home there.
I believe much of the elite "liberal" opinion making that's critical of identity politics is really rooted in fear that making space for others may force them to give up the game. All this business about protecting the rational life of the mind is largely nonsense.
Any time an ostensibly liberal academic/thought leader type writes about the dangers of tribalism or identity politics, know that it's an act of self-protection, not rooted in principle but fear the jig will be up if their world is truly made transparent.
One byproduct of the Kavanaugh mess is that it's truly shining a light on the cesspool underneath that these folks are operating in.
I've got nothing personal against any of these people, but I do resent being lectured to by folks who have deluded themselves into thinking their place of privilege makes them correct, as well as that that place means they must be listened to. It's a con, a grift. Just say no.
This kicker from Chua/Rubenfeld is particularly galling in the light of The Guardian's reporting. They're lecturing about the brilliant fairness of a system where they've been leaning on the levers to benefit their preferred tribe members. Give me a break.
A shout out to @TheAtlantic too which never seems to tire of publishing people of this tribe who want to make this argument.
