Might as well throw my hat into the Nintendo online debate now that I'm finally out of class.
Personally I don't have a problem with Nintendo charging for online. It's 2018 and every major console does this.
PC will never charge you to go online for games, rather your internet provider will lol. Plus I think the PC crowd got real lucky with Steam which makes all this shit so much easier than 20 or even 10 years ago.
Trying to compare the online ecosystem of both PC and the Switch is beyond ignorant. You can't expect the Switch to match the PC in features and do it all for free.
Plus playing games online on with your PC wasn't perfect. It was free yes but it was often a pain in the ass to setup. You had to have real good internet and the knowledge to make it work. Thankfully this has all gotten easier as time has passed and technology has improved.
Anyway as far as console manufacturers providing online services goes, it's pretty easy to say Nintendo has the worst of the three. It's provides the least amount of features, p2p is fucking dumb in 2018, and voice chat on a smartphone app is retarded.
That being said there are some good ideas in there. Cloud Saves is a good thing even if I don't care about them. NES games are a good start to replacing the virtual console but it goes without saying they should add more games and consoles.
We can also expect that as Nintendo starts to get money for this service it will gradually improve over time. (Maybe good servers who knows?) The biggest benefit is of course the price. For $20 you shouldn't expect PSN or Microsoft Live for a service that's a third of the price.
Also I guess I should mention that yes if you stop paying for the service you don't get the features anymore. Expecting anything else is entitlement straight up.
My biggest issue with Nintendo Online myself is the way Nintendo went about presenting this. I don't understand why Nintendo decided to hype this up since before the switch came out.
They should have waited until they had something worth showing. Instead they revealed almost all their info early this year and then simply repeated that info in the latest Nintendo direct.
Like I felt the people at Nintendo expected people not only to love this service but to follow it as it gets closer to release. Needless to say it didn't work out that way.
To wrap all of this up: If you don't like the idea of companies charging for online don't support it. If you feel that Nintendo isn't allowed to charge for online because quote "they didn't do payed online before this" then don't support it.
If your mad because you did pay for it and it doesn't work well than either don't support it anymore or wait until the service inevitably gets better in about a year. Early adopters never have a nice time especially with technology.
Let's be real for a second and acknowledge that a service this big is gonna have issues for the first month. That's to be expected for Nintendo and its to be expected for most companies and technology.
I myself won't be getting the service. Mainly because I don't care about playing most console games online. If that's your thing that's cool I'm just not a fan of those online heavy games myself. (Except Pokémon) Figured I'd say that to let you know where I'm coming from.
Anyway that's it for my long ass Twitter thread. Thanks to anyone who read all of this. Be sure to let me know your thoughts on Nintendo Online!
