Weekend writing project: have realised that sumo's banzuke is a much better metaphor for university rankings than football/baseball league tables and I am going to bore you all to tears explaining why.
Basically, you need to think of Harvard, Oxford Stanford (internationally - domestic equivs would be UT, McGill, UBC) )as Yokozunas who are not only at the top of the table but by definition can never be demoted, you get something closer to the dynamics of how these things work.
Why yes, I was up at 3AM watching the basho live, why do you ask?
University-rankings-as-sumo-banzuke piece is finished and is lit, as the kids say. Expect to have it inflicted upon you later this week.
