"we can't whistle at women now? women are too sensitive these days. They think a compliment = sexual assault."
Actual comments I've seen lately.
So allow me to educate you, men-who-say-these-things. I'll pretend for a moment that you actually care to understand.
When you whistle at me while I'm walking down the street or otherwise going about my business, my flight-or-fight stress response instantly kicks in. I have no idea if you're the guy that will get mad I ignore you, follow me down the street yelling at me, or worse.
I have no idea if you're the man that will threaten me for not smiling or accepting your unwanted attention. Or the man that will call me a cunt and yell about what you'd like to do to my body because I didn't accept your "compliment".
But I do know this: you ARE the man who just made my world unsafe. The man who thinks ur entitled to comment on my appearance. The man who felt the entitlement of forcing ur attention on me. How am I 2 know in that moment that ur not also the violent man who forces more on me?
Think for a moment about what it would be like for u to be unable to exist in public without men constantly forcing their sexual attraction on you. In a world where those men have the power to hurt you at a whim? To make you pay for not giving them deference and gratefulness?
That's the world I live in. So no. You can't whistle at women anymore. We're done living in a world that makes our existence unsafe and constantly on guard because of you. Get used to it, cupcake. We're angry and we're fed up and we will not take this shit any longer.
This world is our world too and we are taking it back. You can either help or you can be deemed the enemy. And getting mad because we're suspicious after generations of men creating and enabling this world makes you the enemy, just FYI.
Get over yourselves and help us create a better world where we can walk down the street and not cringe when we pass men. And please decide soon because I'm done watching my 12 and 11yo daughters get cat-called for merely existing in public.
And yes, good men, men who care, men who respect women, do this too. They don't know any better, they've been taught this entitlement from birth.

Except now they do. We are telling them. And now we expect them to do better.
