This is untrue. Though Ruth Deech is a very eminent lawyer, EU law is not one of her areas of expertise. There are and have been many brilliant jurists on the Court, not just from the U.K. and Ireland but also the continent.
Since our own Lady Hale is a former “prof”, that criticism is a bit strange. And referring casually to “civil servants” ignores the very different structure of many continental legal professions, especially in administrative law.
As for “short term contracts” the term is 6 years - longer than many recent U.K. Supreme Court tenures. And since the Court delivers single collective judgments, it’s implausible to suggest Member States decide whether to reappoint judges depending on their judicial record.
It’s a pity that @BaronessDeech - who is very distinguished in her own fields - felt it appropriate to lend her support to ill-informed and prejudiced criticisms of a court that has often protected key U.K. interests.
Most importantly it has always protected what used to be accepted as being the key U.K. interest in enforcing the rules of the single market.
This is an excellent and more detailed rebuttal of @BaronessDeech’s unimpressive comment.
