A woman won the Nobel Prize in Physics?!?!?!? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Right. Time to learn about Donna Strickland, the 3rd woman to EVER be awarded the prize. cbc.ca/news/technolog…
I still think the Nobel Prizes (particularly for physics) are sexist garbage with this whole “50 years between each woman” trend they’ve got going on, but I’ll take learning a new name, dammit.

& she’s not even a variant of Maria!!!
I’m not covering the Nobel Prizes, but if any of my women scicomm peeps are doing explainers on chirped pulse amplification of lasers, please ping so I can boost your work. 💥
Ahahahaha, so. Turns out. Strickland is an Associate Professor.

And Waterloo doesn’t appear to be embarrassed about that.

I’m sure their tenure & promotion process is totally sensible.
....ohmy.

Um, @UWaterloo? Your Associate (!) Prof just made pretty huge history for women in STEM, and you’re talking about “mankind” and don’t even interview her for your own press release.

I’m... not sure this is the impression you want to give.
Q: Why is Strickland an Associate Prof?
A: “I never applied.”

$#%*!!
Right. Ok. So.

Something is seriously broken in Waterloo’s Physics Department. And with their promotion system. Her pay scale is also fucked if you check public disclosures.
What is even happening?! @UWaterloo deleted, then REPOSTED THE SAME THING with “mankind” & “Eh, we’ll just quote Strickland talking to G&M without talking to her ourselves” story intact.

THAT’S NOT HOW THIS WORKS. HOW ARE THEY SCREWING THIS UP. BAD UNIVERSITY NO COOKIE.
And now they’ve fixed it to humankind.

I cannot even.

Just...

THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CELEBRATION. STOP MAKING THINGS WORSE. Just let me be excited about lasers & not contemplating how women are so badly failed by society they get screwed for not demanding raises & promotions
$&*@#!!!!

For fuck’s sake, fucking dammit I cannot even fuck this shit HOW. HOW IS EVERYTHING TERRIBLE.

Here’s Strickland’s brand-fucking-new Wikipedia page because she only had to WIN A NOBEL PRIZE to be fucking notable enough: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Str…
I decided to stop looking at the all the FUCKING OVERWHELMING BULLSHIT #*@%!!, focus on Strickland’s research, read her papers, try to give you a solid science explainer to counteract my inarticulate rage.

I ran into a problem.
It’s going to take a while:
Note: IT SHOULDN’T BE UNUSUAL FOR STRICKLAND TO WIN FOR HER GRAD RESEARCH.

For example:
Marie Curie, 1903 Physics
Svante Arrenius, 1903 Chemistry
Louis de Brouglie, 1929 Physics
Brian Josephson, 1972 Physics
John Nash, 1994 Econ

It’s also really common for grad/advisor duos.
You know which grad students DON’T get Nobel Prizes for their work, with all the credit going to their advisors while they’re explicitly excluded? Wanna guess the common theme of those controversies? Go on...

Hint: Learn about Jocelyn Bell. Then keep digging.
Meanwhile in Canada:
Governor General (& astronaut) @GGJuliePayette, Science Minister @KirstyDuncanMP, Foreign Affairs Minister @cafreeland are celebrating Donna Strickland.

PM @JustinTrudeau is talking women’s history.
And if you were wondering. OUR FREAKING COUNTRY’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT @Canada hasn’t said ANYTHING since celebrating Pamela Anderson, Shania Twain, & Bryan Adams yesterday.

FOR FUCK’S SAKE WHY IS THIS SO HARD.
It’s not like @Canada wins a lot of Nobel Prizes! Donna Strickland is the 26th EVER (including immigrants & expats), the 5th to win for Physics, & the 2nd woman (after is Alice Munro, 2013 Literature).

This is embarrassing. How is my country getting caught this unprepared?
7 hours.

It took 7 hours, until 1:30pm his local time, for our prime minister to realize that maybe he should congratulate Donna Strickland making history as the 1st Canadian woman to win a Nobel Prize in science & the 3rd woman to EVER win the Nobel Prize in Physics.
I made a mistake at checking which science organizations had celebrated Donna Strickland today.

All my love to the ones posting “We’re working so hard to support women in STEM!!” messages while ignoring history being made.

No, wait.
“Love” is the wrong word.
8 hours.

I guess now we know how long it takes to shove an unscheduled message through our government social media approval process.
So... how many times & by how many people over how many years do you think Strickland was nominated prior to being awarded the Nobel Prize?

Any bets may be resolved in 2068.
Giving credit:
@NSERC_CRSNG, Canada’s big science funder encompassing Strickland’s research field, has been boosting stories about her all day.

@McMasterU, the uni where she’s alumna, is practically beside themselves with joy (& quotes her directly):
Epilogue.

(That is if another university doesn’t poach her, which is highly likely as Queens has the only other living physics Nobel Laureate in the country.)
