SCRETARY POMPEO: Thank you, Foreign Minister Wang. Thank you for welcoming me to Beijing. I did indeed want to come here to have discussions (inaudible) the issues that you’ve characterized we have a fundamental disagreement.
We have grave concerns about the actions that China has taken, and I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss each of those today because this is an incredibly important relationship.
I do want to share with you my visit with Chairman Kim Jong-un yesterday and the progress we’ve made, and to make sure that we are working together on our joint mission that we’ve talked about before: the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
So I know we’ll have good, candid, frank conversations with respect to that issue and the broader set of relations between our two countries.

I regret that the Strategic Dialogue between our two countries was something that you all chose not to undertake.
It would have been an important opportunity for us to have a discussion about these longer-term, important issues that present opportunities for the people of our two countries.

So thank you for hosting me today. I look forward to our conversation.

MAHATHIR IN CHINA, A THREAD: As Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad (@chedetofficial) prepares for his closely watched visit to China starting Friday, here's my (imperfect) attempt at chronicling key developments leading up to this visit.
1. Mahathir's most strident criticism of Chinese investment began in early 2017, well after he quit Najib Razak's Umno and formed PPBM (now in ruling coalition). In Jan 2017, he sparred with Johor Sultan over Country Garden's Forest City. Mahathir called it a "foreign enclave".
2. Soon after, he began training his guns on two other Chinese-backed projects: the Melaka Gateway port development and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL). This antipathy towards Chinese infrastructure investment played out in various media comments.
