@pekosaba @OddGhost it's been a few years since this event so i'm somewhat fuzzy, but i can give you the high level: i told her that I have trouble prioritizing, remembering and scheduling, and that those were my primary issues that I needed outright help with

@pekosaba @OddGhost i said "if you want me to email someone to request something, and you tell me that at your desk, if there's an IM reminder waiting for me when i get back to my desk I'll actually remember to do it"

@pekosaba @OddGhost i said that sending me outlook tasks reminding me to do things instead of just telling me verbally would make it much more likely that i'd do them

@pekosaba @OddGhost i think the most important thing is that i leveled with her, i said "I am unreliable. if you value my work, I need you to treat me as unreliable," and *got her agreement that this was reasonable.*

@pekosaba @OddGhost and her solution was that when she asked me to do things, she would say "how can I help make sure you get this done" which would give me an opening to actually say something like "you know, I've been frazzled today - a reminder in half an hour would help"

@pekosaba @OddGhost or i could say "I'm going to put it on my calendar but send me an IM so when I get back from lunch I remember to put it on my calendar"

but i can't stress enough that all of this requires that your boss not be a raging man-prick who expects you to act neurotypical.

@pekosaba @OddGhost the #1 thing is, I'm never going to be normal. i'm not going to behave like other employees who remember things. that *has* to be on the table, it *has* to be agreed on. and it sucks because the flip side of the coin is you just got yourself fired.

@pekosaba @OddGhost like, if you say "I'm never going to be able to perform like other employees" then maybe your boss says "then I'll get someone who can" and that's a pretty hard point to argue with. if you can't tolerate losing that job then you gotta focus on the self-help angles
