I've got something still on my mind about how unfit Kavanaugh is to be a judge, let alone a justice of the supreme court. Come and listen. 1/
In this country, we generally give people only the respect we think they are due or that our choice to be courteous suggests. But we accord unusual signs of deference to some roles, like judges. 2/
We do that NOT because those people are better than we are (heck no! Have some self respect!), but because we are showing our respect for the importance of that role as a key element of our system of justice & governance. 3/
When you're in a courtroom, you call the judge "Your Honor." No matter how sassy your natural disposition, no matter how upset you are by the stressful events of being on trial in court, you hold it in check & show respect for the judge, & there are consequences if you don't. 4/
But... The courtroom isn't the only venue where we show a higher degree of deference in order to show respect for important roles in our democracy. We behave similarly during legislative events, such as, say, senate committee hearings. 5/
Yet there, in that formal position of a witness in the committee hearing, Kavanaugh not perjured himself & threatened revenge on his political foes, but he also engaged in behaviors that utterly failed to conform to the standards of respect & deference due a senator. 6/
He rudely backtalked, demanding that senators answer the questions they posed to him. Kavanaugh showed no respect for the forum, for the standards for behavior required of a witness, or for the senators in their roles as representatives of the people. 7/
Sure he was under stress. SO ARE CRIMINAL DEFENDANTS WHOSE LIVES & LIBERTY ARE ON THE LINE. But neither Kavanaugh nor any judge would excuse that kind of behavior in a courtroom. 8/
Kavanaugh's behavior in the committee hearing was consistent with his overall demeanor, revealing that he is a person who doesn't feel the rules apply to him. Perjure yourself to avoid a bad situation? That's fine for the elite like Kavanaugh. 9/
Backtalk female senators? Of course. Kavanaugh doesn't need to abide by the rules & standards of the forum or show respect to our legislative leaders - HE'S the one who should be shown respect. 10/
We're a democracy that, very imperfectly, is based on the notion that every member of our society is worthy of dignity & respect. The founding fathers considered & rejected the idea that we should have inherited titles. 11/
Titles & the obsequious bowing & unctuous scraping they demand would offend against our pride, dignity & liberty as Americans. But the entitled likes of Brett Kavanaugh don't agree. You owe him your bows. 12/
Kavanaugh doesn't receive with humility the respect due a judge, accepting the heavy responsibility we entrust to this role. He doesn't respect the parties in court & see that each has a role in that setting & all are due dignity. 13/
Kavanaugh wants power, demands it as his due, & refuses to accept that he has obligations to show respect & acknowledge others' weighty roles in our government. His entitled hypocrisy runs counter to the essence of democracy & has no place on our highest court. He is unfit. 14/14
