Last night some people asked me why decentralized systems were useful, given that a company could just set up a couple of centralized servers. Then I explained what NotPetya did to Maersk. wired.com/story/notpetya…
Specifically, I explained this part of the story. None of these folks, who were well-connected business people, had any idea.
And the crazy thing is that in this case, Maersk wasn’t even a target. They were basically in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their system survived because the Ghana office had a *power outage*.
Ok, I know this is all old news to this audience. But what if this had been a major stock exchange instead of, say, just one of the largest shipping operations on the planet. That could have actually been sort of messy.
So yes. Cryptocurrency and ledger people are kind of crazy. Believe me I feel that. But you know what’s really crazy? Betting the stock price of a major firm *and* the global shipping network on the idea that a few servers won’t get shredded by a determined attacker.
