The lady in the apartment study said that she felt she had been treated *nicely* by the super who told her there were no apartments in the building and they chatted some; that same polite man told a white person who came later that there was, in fact, an apartment available.
No one slammed a door in her face. No one called her a name. And yet.
FTR: they did this paired testing thousands of times with different “actors” looking for housing and consistently found this. The actors presented to supers and leasing agents identical financial credentials, so the disparity wasn’t about who was “more qualified.”
(They also found that the white actors were more likely to be offered *discounts* on their rents. So brown apartment-seekers were operating in a smaller pool of potential housing and with higher costs.)
