New paper on The Opportunity Costs of Socialism: whitehouse.gov/briefings-stat… via @whitehouse
/6 Wait times for elective surgery in the US are shorter for *everyone* (in 16 developed countries) -- not just seniors. Can’t use the chart as proof that socialized medicine (ie, what some believe Medicare is) works. Note that Medicare is, in fact, not socialized healthcare.
/6 And we are in the top 3 for lowest wait times to see a specialist. Again, for all age groups, not just seniors.
/6 Also note the countries in the chart from our paper and the charts above do *not* have free healthcare. Consumers pay something. M4A is entirely “free” = longer lines.
/6 M4A is *not* the same as Medicare. Even for seniors, Medicare is not a single-payer system because of Medicare Advantage. Even if M4A were eliminated, that would only be a small step toward single-payer because a minority of Americans (less than 20%) are on Medicare.
/6 To summarize: M4A is a lot things Medicare is *not*. It outlaws all private insurance, doesn’t allow providers to earn profits (which leads to/incentivizes cures and treatments), and is true govt-run/single-payer healthcare.
/6 Medicare for All is more like Medicaid, which is notorious for poor access to care/long wait times.
/6 Correction to Tweet 4/6, which should read: Even if Medicare Advantage were eliminated, that would only be a small step toward single-payer because a minority of Americans (less than 20%) are on Medicare.
