At my father’s funeral a woman my mother had never met came to offer condolences.

Apparently, when she and her husband were grad students they’d purchased furniture from the store where my father was a salesman. They’d missed payments and the store was going to repossess.

My dad loaned them money to avoid repossession of the furniture. She never forgot it.

My dad was dating mom at the time and never mentioned it to her. He did it because he thought he could help. Not because he thought he could win points with the woman he wanted to marry.

I think about that some times when I think about the man I want to be, the example I want to set for my kids. Even if I’m dead by the time they realize it.

There has never been a more important time for me to be that man.

Maybe for any of us.

Man or woman.
