Tonight I attended a landlord’s info evening, put on by a property management company.

60% info, 40% advertising.

The following are the notes I took, in order...
1. He refers to his female staff members as “girls” WTF?

(At least 30x throughout the evening)
2. This is fear based bullshit.

3. More triggering of baby-boomer fears in order to make money.
4. “Gut feeling” = racism.

(When asked what processes were used in selecting tenants.)
5. Statement Of Insulation. 1st July 2019.

6. Insurance Disclosure to tenants. End of 2019.

7. Rent increases to be no more frequent than annually.

(These were good things to learn about upcoming law reform.)
8. He’s still calling his staff “girls”!!! CREEPY AF!

(The person beside me saw me write this and quickly turned away.)
9. “This is more of a statement than a question...” BINGO!

-Many snarky digs at a government that cares about renters.
-I’m so sorry if you’ve ever had landlords like the ones I witnessed tonight 💔
-Baby-boomers are selfish AF!

As I was driving to work today, I noticed an odd, thick hair under my arm.
It didn’t look like a normal hair and it was the only one in that area.
I did what any normal person would do, and went to grab it, to pull it out.
As my fingers got near it, it moved.
It was swaying or twitching all on its own!

I finally caught it between my thumb and middle finger, and pulled.

It wouldn’t come out. It was moving more, trying to escape my grasp.

I pulled even harder.

Some council members are concerned that too many properties get sold to investors or rental property managers - which they worry will undercut neighborhood stability.

Attended my first startup pitch evening for a while, for startups working with a major bus operator. The sense from the audience (mainly bus people) reaction was impressed with anything with AI and Big Data, less so with stuff that helps with the basics.
A cleaning startup was practically mocked. A software that enabled better route scheduling had glazed looks, and a demand responsive coach service got the cold shoulder until they pitched their growth statistics. And the business they were nicking off the bus operators.
All of the pitches were actually pretty good, and have a clear problem definition and strategy to solve it. Personally I loved the school run taxi service and a service that basically took the data the operators have and made it useful.

HARRISBURG - The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that former Pennsylvania State Treasurer Robert M. McCord, age 59, currently residing in Long Branch, New Jersey,
was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment by U.S. District Court Judge John E. Jones, III, for two counts of attempted extortion.

Judge Jones also ordered McCord to pay a $5,000 fine and to report to the Bureau of Prisons on October 29, 2018.

In order to access our belongings, the property management company wants us to release them from any legal responsibility whatsoever after a fire broke out in the basement.
A few things I want to point out here.
1) For several months in 2017 St James Town had no gov representation. Our city councilor died, our MPP resigned, and our MP was Bill Morneau, who was not especially involved in local matters.
2) Until the management company brought in a PR firm to tell residents our rents DEFINITELY weren't going up as they made "neighbourhood improvements" the only way to request fumigation or repairs was to go during office hours in person to fill out a form.

This is, surprisingly, more a "Japanese landlords really prefer salarymen" than a "Japanese landlords really anti-prefer foreigners" thing. The second happens, too, but the first preference is more common and harder to talk around.
Note that often you're not discussing your suitability to rent with the landlord, you're discussing with their agent, like the property management company which actually runs the place.
So when the agent says "The landlord prefers I don't rent to foreigners" you can say something like: "Oh, clearly the landlord meant that they didn't want *those* foreigners, but I'm well-versed in acting like an adult, socially established, fluent, etc. Let's have a meeting."
