The verb for what we want universities to do in relation to Indigenous communities is really hard to determine. It’s not “indigenize,” + it’s not “make visible.” It’s not “decolonize.”

Universities need to engage in extensive, specific, layered and humble acts of repair, and even then it is hard to predict what the word for the effect of those acts will be.

Some Indigenous colleagues at U of Toronto and I have been talking about Indigenous presencing—
But Indigenous presencing (following Leanne Simpson) is what *we* are doing in relation to one another, and to land and waters.

This is to say I am not satisfied by the words we are trying to use to describe what universities need to be doing in relation to Indigenous peoples.
Perhaps it is because “seeking consent and then immediately stopping when consent is refused” and “universities ceasing to exist in their current exploitative formations,” and “ending capitalism” are not on the table 🤷🏻‍♀️
