I'm dissatisfied with how continental philosophers understand why people act in ways against their own "interests."

Please let me know: Which Indigenous and Black writers could I be reading on this instead? Other philosophies?
Qagasaakung for responding to my question! So cool that many of the suggestions are already on my bookshelf-- I need to get back to those books, some of which I haven't read since graduate school.

The verb for what we want universities to do in relation to Indigenous communities is really hard to determine. It’s not “indigenize,” + it’s not “make visible.” It’s not “decolonize.”

Universities need to engage in extensive, specific, layered and humble acts of repair, and even then it is hard to predict what the word for the effect of those acts will be.

Some Indigenous colleagues at U of Toronto and I have been talking about Indigenous presencing—
But Indigenous presencing (following Leanne Simpson) is what *we* are doing in relation to one another, and to land and waters.

This is to say I am not satisfied by the words we are trying to use to describe what universities need to be doing in relation to Indigenous peoples.

I know that there is much (deserved) outrage about that article, but much of social science is a tacit endorsement of colonialism.
This is not *new* it is the past and the future of many disciplinary fields. Those which do work on people and not with them.

Notice how both Trump and Boris have pivoted from deriding "the elite" to appropriating that label for their respective - and intertwined - visions.

This is what populism is always about: rallying people to work directly against their own interests to reaffirm hegemony. Always.
There's a lot to be said about the international conservative networks and how they coordinate messaging, whether it's through Lynton Crosby's and Rupert Murdoch's brands, or through the ultranationalism of Bannon, Farage, et al.

You do know they don't care about people, right?
Ontario now has a government, too, that purports itself as champion of "the people," that ever-nebulous entity, much like the North American "middle class," that only exists in the minds of people who are either rallied by the dog-whistle or conducting it.

That's populism.

1. Where there was once elite consensus that trade wars are the very definition of dumb, some elites are now saying that if the policy experts can’t soften President Trump’s calcified mind, perhaps voters can, especially his fellow Republicans.
2. The thinking is that farmers, the white working class, and Rotary Club businessmen—the very heart of the Republican Party—are going to feel the most pain from a trade war. Once they do, surely GOP voters will resist, or maybe revolt.

Many #writers wander into the craft with an idealistic mindset. I know I did. I thought it would be easy.

Yeah I'm still on this consent rant because it's always on my mind now. Thread incoming about the changing definition of consent and what a lot of people are probably going through...
So this thread is amazing. And really highlights the fact that a lot of women develop different ideas about sex.

And where and how those ideas about sex are developed isn't so much a parent or a school or a lover, it's a lifetime of information, and information processed through a framework that continues to be built and rebuilt over time and life experience.
