I know that there is much (deserved) outrage about that article, but much of social science is a tacit endorsement of colonialism.
This is not *new* it is the past and the future of many disciplinary fields. Those which do work on people and not with them.
Those which make the researcher and not the person or community the expert
Research that is obsessed with "development," with closing gaps, catching up, even sometimes reconciliation
All of this can naturalize the (ongoing) violent starting point of colonization and thereby posit that good things can come from colonialism
Much argumentation on social science balances on the notion of eminent domain-- social science is the practice of eminent domain
Social science is the practice of manifest destiny
There is no research program in settler society which does not have to contend with this.
News about this article came out the same day that news about miners in a bar were recorded boasting about a massacre they had committed
That's how I think of this article: a recording of some boasting in a bar.
When the recordings come out, we can be shocked by their boasting, but that seething violent arrogance was always there.
It is clear by the way the universities are designed that they do not anticipate Indigenous presence or futurity.
I am learning from my experiences of trying to implement piecemeal changes in universities how strident + entrenched lack of anticipation is
