Sorry, but no, Sen. Joe McCarthy was *not* famous for making "nuanced insinuations" without "formally lodging an allegation."
McCarthy was direct and unsubtle. He himself bragged that he "went for the groin" and "kicked the brains out" of his opponents in head-on attacks.

This is too idiotic to warrant a thread, but I'll leave these old ones here for people -- like the author of that piece -- who apparently never read anything about McCarthy.
All that said, special thanks to the web design of @thehill which somehow evades a popup blocked to fill the screen with various ads and autoplay videos -- presumably to protect the visitor from having to read the idiotic words in this column.
