You guys, something really interesting is happening with Amazon workers in Minnesota. A group of Somali workers organized and appear to be the first known group in the US to push Amazon to the table
nytimes.com/2018/11/20/tec…
Labor organizers and researchers told me they haven't heard of this happening in the US before
As @josheidelson reported this summer, they held actions when Prime Day coincided with Ramadan bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Since then things have changed behind the scene, and the Somali workers and management sat down at two private meetings this fall
Amazon offered to make some changes, but this Saturday the workers decided it was not enough and plan a big protest on Dec. 14.
There is also an incredibly interesting back story about how Amazon worked to hire East African workers when it opened a huge warehouse in 2016. Unemployment was v low and Amazon ran buses from Little Mogadishu, worked w comm groups, has prayer rooms at the warehouses
And I should note that Amazon said it does not view this as negotiations, but rather a form of community outreach, along the lines of working to help veterans transition to the workforce
