It has been proven that people in market niches will subscribe to digital content and it can be profitable if COGSs are low. In one case there are 3 million subscribers. It does not solve the problem of educating an electorate of hundreds of millions, but it is a good thing.
Right now for mass markets we have: 1) advertising supported, 2) government subsidized and 3) philanthropically supported publishing models to serve the mass market and the current outcome is suboptimal for all alternatives. The era of a few dozen media gatekeepers is gone.
