this study found that left-wing authoritarian preferences were strongest in: bulgaria, belarus, russia, romania, and ukraine. less strong, or not at all present, in: hungary, slovenia, slovakia, poland, the baltic states. Further Research Required™ ofc.

core europe. where bipartite manorialism/communal field systems were present during middle ages. significance: along w/small families+low cuz marriage rates, produced pops w/very low viscosity. individuals interacted with/married non-kin more than kin. 2/n
bipartite manorialism pushed for nuclear families in nw europe and did so early. by the 800s tenants on manors in france were living in nuclear families. significance: nw euros have worked/cooperated more w/non-kin than other pops have for 1000+ years. 3/n

Let’s talk about low-carb diets! The skinny on them is that they work (in part) because restricting carbs, especially refined ones, controls hunger. But does it? There’s a ton of evidence about that. Let’s look at it! Here's the theory.

The idea is that carbs, especially refined ones, drive the release of insulin, which clears the bloodstream of glucose. When blood sugar drops, you get hungry. Therefore, refined carbs make you hungry, and you overeat.
The Glycemic Index (GI) measures how quickly your body turns food into sugar. High-GI = quick, low-GI = slow. But here’s the question: does that actually correlate with hunger? Here are some of the studies.

Some days I'm really frustrated by people holding opinions in the face of experiments and data showing the opposite. It's one thing to say that the experiment isn't valid (and then please say why you think so), it's another to misread it entirely.
I'll be the first to admit that experiments around things like TDD are hard, but Medium posts like this one don't even attempt to look at the literature. blog.usejournal.com/lean-testing-o…

Here's a thread for @Noahpinion on how economists have studied African development. We can divide this into i) long-run causes: (pre) colonial history, slavery, political institutions, ethnicity, and ii) proximate causes: mkt and govt failures. I'll focus on the first.
First, does pre-colonial history matter? Big time. The slave trade had long-lasting effects on development (Nunn 2008) dash.harvard.edu/bitstream/hand… . The likely mechanism was reduced trust among tribes. Nunn and Wantchekon (2011) aeaweb.org/articles?id=10….
But it goes back further than that. Michalopoulos and Papaioannou (2013) show that pre-colonial political centralization importantly predicts present-day development onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.3982/EC….
