mountains, snow, avalanches and climate at #ISSW2018
Now sitting in on a session with @oeav on excessive ski area development in Tirol.
Lots of ski areas in Tirol, more lifts planned as resorts try to outrace #globalwarming. But it’s too much, says @oeav - seele-der-alpen.at
A planned new law in Tirol would open a “back door” to new expansions and greenwash ski development, says @oeav president Andreas Ermacora.
Dear snow scientists: am I missing something at #issw2018? There is ALREADY detailed documentation of dramatic low-elevation snow decline. google.com/amp/s/psmag.co…
Here it sounds so abstract and distant but it’s already reality for many ski hills and communities. steiermark.orf.at/m/news/stories…
There’s ‘variability,’ and there are climate extremes that already have a direct and serious impact on ski communities.
Innsbruck = Breckenridge when it comes to parking & traffic ... #transportation madness in the anthropoid right
This reminds of the big Free Box in #telluride... #degrowth
All #risotto ...
Lunch break is over so back to #ISSW2018 and geeking out on snow and avalanche science!
Tough titles, but it’s all critical info about what happens to snow with #globalwarming. Snow turns into water (or glacial ice) and changes in the mountains will affect people far away.
Hmmm, what I’d like to see at #issw2020 is some interdisciplinary research on #snow and #globalwarming and discussion of cumulative effects. Too many silos ... #issw2018
... and from my old @Arapahoe_Basin stomping grounds, some info on avalanche control in the Steep Gullies. How many towers and feet of cable total @als_blog?
Looks like #drones, specialized apps and the cloud are all part of the future for avalanche safety #issw2018
... and field testing starts this season for wearable warning systems, with auditory and haptic signals. Very interesting (but no substitute for basic avalanche & mountain savvy. #issw2018
... it’s already been evaluated (previous tweet) in a virtual reality setting with a specially designed game. I have mixed feelings. How far are we willing to go with technology? #issw2018 ...
On the other hand, it’s a really cool idea!
This, apparently, is the Death Star for avalanches. @ me if you want to know more. #issw2018
Automatic people detection sounds like surveillance ... #skiing #avalanches #issw2018
Making snowflakes in a lab - totally geeking out at #issw2018!
Hey all my #ISSW2018 ski Tweeps - this custom skimaker is really sweet. They do workshops where you can build your own custom planks in a day. Spurart.at
Great to see a public day at #ISSW2018 - doesn’t look busy in this pic but there were a lot students, school groups ...
I asked a handful of people about #globalwarming and snow. You’ll have to read the story for details, but it han’t really sunk in yet that if we don’t cut emissions, winter landscapes in 2100 will be mostly devoid of snow except for high peaks.
Saw your tweet about #nordkette @ProfessorPowder so snapped this for you. Currently tweeting this thread about #ISSW2018
Dang #spellcheck! Shoulda been #anthropocene age ...
Very cool to see some social science like this at #ISSW2018 More, please!
Minerals and microbes interact in the snow ... do biological processes have an inderestimated role in snowpack? #ISSW2018
Wow, so much going on, and fascinating #snowscience of all sorts at #ISSW2018 - lots of stuff in your direction @LizBurakowski @MtnRA (thread) ...
There’s a wealth of info in historical avalanche records, and interesting to see how some of that is being used by modern researchers. #ISSW2018
Little hard to think about snow today at #ISSW2018 at 22C. A strong #föhn knocked over these bikes (thread) ...
That same #föhn built a dank wave over the #Nordkette yesterday, perfect soaring conditions for skilled pilots.
Riding up the Nordkette tram gives you a feel for how much loose rock can be mobilized. I explored how melting snow and ice could affect this - insideclimatenews.org/news/26092018/…
#strudel is the new lunch, btw.
Ahhh, finally getting to know this place a bit more. #Innsbruck is a fine mountain city! #ISSW2018
Underpasses keep bicyclentraffic flowing along some of the main arteries ...
Bike counter helps raise awareness ... about non-motorized transit ... 135,000 trips at this spot. #urbanmobility
And local public transit provides access from the town center to the mountain peaks seamlessly.
#nordkette funicular ...
My kind of transit!
(#ISSW2018 Thread) This is where the tram ends, #Hafelkar looking S toward the Brenner Pass over Innsbruck. Cc @climate_ice
... and north into the Karwendel alpine park. karwendel.org
Atop the Hafelekar there is also a lab long-used to measure cosmic radiation, founded by Victor Hess, who won a @NobelPrize for this work, which started with daring balloon flights.
The placard is a bit faded but the story is timely. Hess may have won a @nobelprize but he was forced to retire by the Nazis and emigrated to the U.S. where he became a professor at @FordhamNYC ...
According to the display, Hess wanted to return to Austria after WWII but was not able to because of some unspecified political reason. Point being, times of rising nationalism are NOT good for #science.
I love mountains and I’m concerned about how #GlobalWarming is affecting them. #ISSW2018 google.com/amp/s/psmag.co…
... So I’m interested to see next year’s @IPCC_CH special report on oceans and cryosphere, which will include a section #mountains. google.com/amp/s/psmag.co…
