This is a lie.

@realDonaldTrump is the only president to *ever* systematically separate migrant children from their parents as a stated deterrent policy.

I saw those kids in cages with my own eyes — a direct result of a policy put in place by Trump and executed by @SecNielsen.
This was the epicenter of Trump’s separation policy in McAllen, Texas.

This is DHS handout video of a tour we were given of the kids in cages during the separations.

That’s me in the blue shirt.

What Trump did had *never* been done before.
As I told @chrislhayes after I toured that Border Patrol processing station, Trump’s separation policy was worse than it looked in photos.

That Trump says *anyone* other than him is responsible for the trauma these 2,600+ kids went through is complete BS.
Meanwhile, this nightmare isn't over for some of the kids Trump separated *months* ago. As of 11/8:

➡️ 25 kids still in custody and *not eligible* for reunification.
➡️ 99 kids still in custody with deported parents who have *chosen* not to reunite.
New from DHS: “At no time did DHS adopt a blanket policy of separating minors from adults nor did DHS separate for the purposes of deterrence.”

Wrong.

Their *own* Border Patrol chief in sector with most separations told me deterrence was goal.

8 year old boy who died Christmas Eve in Border Patrol custody held with dad in the field for 3 hours.

Then 2 days at a BP processing station.

Then 2 days at another station.

Then moved at 11:17PM to a third station.

That’s when CBP says he got sick.

72 hours is *max* anyone is supposed to be held in Border Patrol stations.

This boy was held twice as long before he died.

The fact migrant kids are dying is horrific — but not surprising.

Deterrence has long resulted in adult deaths in the desert.

I pointed out to @JoyAnnReid in June kids dying would be an inevitable result of Trump targeting families and asylum seekers.

BIG: Trump administration raises official count of migrant kids it separated from parents at border from 2,667 to 2,816.

Government said (in 12/12 report) it *miscategorized 149 kids* and released them to other sponsors like legal guardian, immediate relative or unrelated adult.
Trump administration also released latest number of *still-separated* kids: 161.

➡️ 10 kids are still separated from parents and awaiting reunification.
➡️ 151 kids are still separated but government claims parents aren't "in class," meaning they will not be reunited.
If the Trump administration just discovered and recategorized 149 kids it had previously said weren't separated, how many more will they find?

How many of the kids still in custody are in the wrong category?

Were there others released to the wrong sponsors?

So many questions.

ICE is full of sociopaths and should definitely be abolished, but it’s been hard this week to watch two separate scandals get conflated.
1. Lost children. Under the Obama administration, children who arrived at the border without a parent (UACs) were put into shelters while HHS looked for someone to place them with. No one was being ripped from their parents. This was a GOOD policy.
We WANT those kids to be placed with family or caregivers bc the alternative is them being sent back or kept in detention. Obviously the problem lies in lack of HHS screening/follow-up to make sure these kids were safe in their placements.
