8 year old boy who died Christmas Eve in Border Patrol custody held with dad in the field for 3 hours.

Then 2 days at a BP processing station.

Then 2 days at another station.

Then moved at 11:17PM to a third station.

That’s when CBP says he got sick.

72 hours is *max* anyone is supposed to be held in Border Patrol stations.

This boy was held twice as long before he died.

Violations of this rule aren’t new and were happening during separations as my colleagues @JuliaEAinsley and @ckubeNBC reported. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/h…
The fact migrant kids are dying is horrific — but not surprising.

Deterrence has long resulted in adult deaths in the desert.

I pointed out to @JoyAnnReid in June kids dying would be an inevitable result of Trump targeting families and asylum seekers.
CBP says it will make changes in wake of boy’s death like secondary checks on all detainees under 10.

Also looking at increased coordination with HHS, DOD and CDC.

But bottom line: immigration policy as much to blame as medical response or lack thereof.
