These past few weeks I have been back to old tricks continuing the #conservation of the #Viking #Helmet from #Gjermundbu @Kulturhistorisk

Almost a year ago I took the helmet apart. It consisted of 7 fragments:

I located 10 more pieces in storage, among the fragments of a cauldron from the same grave as the helmet. Here are all the 17 helmet parts layed out after having being cleaned by micro-sandblasting.
3/
Now the focus has been to remount the fragments into a coherent helmet for display. First I needed to find the best way of arranging the parts. To some degree it had to be a compromise as several fragments are severely deformed. A mounting-cap was then formed from paper & glue
4/
To be able to fit and hold in place all the deformed and fragile helmet parts I had to make a lot of nooks and crannies in the mounting-cap.
5/
The cap needed some colour adjustment before it was ready for its first test run with all the helmet parts mounted.
6/
All the 17 fragments of the #Gjermundbu helmet mounted into a wholeness. It is almost ready for display, but the colour of the cap is still a bit off.
7/
I need to take it apart, attune the colour of the mounting cap and make some other minor changes - but then it should be finished and ready for display @Kulturhistorisk
