“Most of us continue to see white women through the lens of gender,” says Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, "This allows for us to be optimistic about the possibility that their gendered oppression will allow for them to find common cause with other dispossessed groups.”
But White women who are disempowered by gender, have been empowered by racism, says Professor Jones-Rogers, whose most recent book is called, "They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South."
When Cindy Hyde-Smith joked about attending a "public hanging" she was drawing on a long history of White women's participation in the lynching of Black men.
I am so interested to read Professor Jones-Rogers book. Such a vital reminder of how we need to analyze White women's experiences/history through the lens of race not just gender.
