X : What should we do in serverless?
Me : Use it?
X : No, what should will build?
Me : Conversational programming (Alexa + ML + Lambda et al), monitoring of capital flow, novel security mechanisms, other stuff (new applications) etc ... see the map
X : What about building a better ...
Me : ... if you're going to say serverless offering, forget it.
X : We could add ML.
Me : Amazon own that.
X : How about a blockchain ...
Me : They own that too. Focus on conversational programming / capital flow - they don't own that yet.
X : But they might provide that in the future?
Me : There's no "might" about it. Amazon will in the future provide a mechanism of conversational programming (and not just the components).
X : So why bother?
Me : By then, you'll have moved up the stack further.
X : How are we supposed to make money if Amazon will just chew up our model?
Me : Easy. Focus on user needs, be adaptable. Learn to move up the stack or find a niche. Don't expect to survive by rent extraction through shoddy services. Those models are going.

Me : University or commercial?
X : Is there a difference?
Me : In academia, people tend to do the research before they submit the proposal to do the research in order to fit in with some sort of scheduled research delivery process / gantt chart ...
... i.e. they spend the time "researching" actually doing research on something else which once completed is submitted as the next research proposal so they guarantee milestones of when it'll be delivered (as it is already done). It's all about hitting KPIs etc.
X : What about commercial research?
Me : Well, a lot isn't actual research in the sense of creating a new field. It's more applied research. So there tends to be less uncertainty. Other areas, well you just have to embrace the chaos. Of course, people still want Gantt charts.

.. but let us not sweat the little stuff like health, society, cohesion but focus on big things like staying in the EU. As we all know, the EC will save us. I can hear Juncker on the phone to May saying "you can't continue privatising the NHS, the EC is going to stop you". Lol.

Me : Not my thing.

Me : What are you after?
X : Acquisitions.
Me : Hmmm, a bucketload of tech acquisitions around Kubernetes. Expect big juicy deals.
X : It's the future?
Me : No. Mostly cash rich past giants with no future being clueless.
X : No market for Kubernetes?
Me : Some very profitable niches. Savvy tech buyer will wait until hype dries up before swooping in for tasty acquisitions around 2021-2022. This year will mainly be the clueless with big chequebooks. Hoping some friends will make it big this year.
X : The market doesn't operate to make your friends rich.
Me : Are you sure? It has been doing a good job of it - Cloud, Big Data, Containers ... it's always the same.
X : So, where is the future?
Me : I thought you were interested in acquisitions? They are not the same.

2019 Wish : The #serverless community practices what it preaches, and focuses the conferences/talks/articles on the value gained, rather than the technology and concepts. In fact, we probably need to have some basic rules for serverless content. For example -
1) Must identify yourself as a practitioner (someone leveraging #serverless technologies to build something of end customer value) or a provider (someone who is providing technology that elables a practitioner to go serverless).
2) Practitioner content must highlight the agility/elasticity/cost gains from using the serverless tech, and the business value tied to solution.Bonus points for minimal code written:: value ratio.

I frequent hospitals especially the laboratory section because while growing up I had this affinity for laboratory tests and experiments. Comparing those days to today will reveal a plethora of changes in methods and approaches to laboratory testing.
The same way dentists of 30years back won’t pride themselves of using the same tools today as they did 30years back. Techniques, devices and approaches have changed tremendously. Did this happen overnight? Of course not. They were gradual and consistent over the years.
These changes also weren’t centered around a single individual or organization but several thought processes and multiple organizations globally contributed to these innovations across board by and large. One may question if these changes were amicable or accepted with fluidity..

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.

Australians were told by Defence Minister Fairhall in 1967 that #PineGap would be a space research base, and that it would not do, “anything of military significance.”
In fact, #PineGap was established 30 kilometres outside of Alice Springs by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a surveillance facility to collect intelligence about military capabilities and weapons systems, particularly missiles, of the Soviet Union and other nations
While its listening capacity is applied to verification & compliance with arms control treaty obligations, #PineGap also plays a role in US nuclear war planning through its capacity to locate and jam Soviet & other air defence radars to ensure US nuclear weapons hit their targets

This is the best thing on Twitter this morning. I see too many security products trying to *replace* human-to-human interaction - there’s a good chunk of security and privacy that’s about *people*.

Let’s make more products which help people STOP, collaborate, and listen 😝
Forgetting about the “people” part of security is why we’ve heard “GRC is dead” for the last 10 years. We’re on “GRC 4.0” now and it *still* sucks.

GRC tools like Archer are designed for Process and Technology but forget about the poor People who have to use that dumpster fire.
We still have new vendors trying to design single-pane-of-glass “CISO dashboards”, meanwhile *very* few security companies are truly focused on people (not just security people) inside of organizations.

@duosec is one of the few companies who has focused on people. @habitu8 too
