I have always been a Zionist. My great-grandfather was a Zionist and my mum was brought up with a JNF collection box on the windowsill. Jewish people didn't have a homeland then and millions paid the ultimate price for its absence.

Zionism to me simply means sanctuary. Before 1948 Jews needed to beg for refuge. They were slaughtered because nobody cared or those that did were powerless to help. Since 1948 millions of Jewish refugees have found a home *only* because Israel exists.
Ask the Kurds, the Rohingya, those in Southern Sudan, the Christians of the Central African Republic or the Yazidis about the importance of sanctuary. The 'progressive' argument against Israel is an illusion without a single example in all of human history to support it.
But I was never ardently Zionist. It took Hamas blowing up buses to do that. It took British bombers murdering my friend in a pub in Tel Aviv to do that and the mist cleared to show that the hate against Jewish people remains both genocidal and very real.
The last few years sealed it. It's impossible to see the ignorance and hate with which Zionism and Israel are discussed without realising Zionism, isn't just based on a right, but also on desperate need.
So thank you haters, for so effectively proving the point.
