It's Saturday but @theintercept is not resting. Three of our stories today show the range of our critical reporting. One of them is @mehdirhasan's critique of the presidency of the late George H.W. Bush, in contrast to hagiographies published elsewhere. theintercept.com/2018/12/01/the…

Don't forget: Rupert Murdoch contaminated Britain's media and political culture before he founded Fox News in America. The most ironic/iconic reminder is from Dennis Potter, the playwright who memorably scalloped Murdoch in his last interview in 1994.
The interview -- Potter had been diagnosed with terminal cancer -- is incredible to watch, a quarter century later. To keep going, Potter had to sip liquid morphine from a flask unscrewed by his host, Melvyn Bragg, who offered to take a break. "It's better to go on," Potter said.
"As a writer, you will know that one of the favorite fantasy plots of a writer is--a character is told you've got three months to live, which is what I was told, and who would you kill? I call my cancer, the main one, the pancreas one, I call it Rupert, so I can get close to it."

One thing I left out in this thread -- the Agnew speech that inspired anti-Semites was written by none other than Pat Buchanan.
The Nixon-Agnew message was largely shaped by two very different speechwriters -- the erudite William Safire and the hard-edged Pat Buchanan.

As he noted in his memoir Before the Fall, Safire crafted some memorable lines for Agnew, including the famous alliterative phrases:
But that Des Moines speech -- the one that anti-Semites responded to -- wasn't written by Safire (who was himself Jewish) but by Buchanan.

As Safire recalled, Buchanan bore most of the responsibility for it and excitedly noted that the confrontational tone "flicked the scab off"

Running for president in 1988 against Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis, Bush’s team discovered that in 1977 Dukakis had vetoed a bill that would require teachers to lead kids in pledging allegiance to the flag each day or pay a fine. 2/
Concerned about the bill’s constitutionality, Dukakis had sought an advisory opinion from Massachusetts’ top court, which concluded that the bill would infringe on teachers’ First Amendment rights. Relying on the opinion, Dukakis vetoed the bill. 3/

George H.W. Bush was the president of my high school years, the time when my personal politics first came into focus. I have his campaigning and policies to thank for some of that. I grasp the need for some to mourn, but I am not here for the hagiography. rol.st/2RqXeU4

Today, my thoughts are with the Bush family who are some of the most incredible people I have ever met.

I am thinking of them during this time of sadness and celebration of a life well-lived.
With the passing of President George H.W. Bush, a lifetime of extraordinary and honorable service – from the cockpit to the White House – has come to an end.
When it’s all said and done, President Bush was one of the best examples of goodness, decency and bravery to ever achieve the Presidency.

He is a great role model for all of us still in the fight and those who aspire to service in the future.

A truly great American.
