it’s weird to hear people obsessing over white rural voter “pain” in 2018 while still clinging to 2009 economic conditions.
I’m *not* suggesting Iowa is flooded w/ high-paying jobs. I am suggesting realities have shifted in recent years but the talking points have not

French claims manufacturing has not disappeared in a generation. But the article HE CITES touts manufacturing gains (under Trump) for the 1st time in 13 years. Further, the article says the sector is at an all-time low, from 28% in 1953 to 11.6% in 2017.

His claim that marijuana use among our youth is on a slight uptick and nothing to worry about is laughable on its face. The chart he cites shows a major rise since the 1990s - and even this is sketchy because self-reporting studies are dubious at best

Over the weekend @desmoinesdem published my article about reaching #rural voters and it spurred some outstanding discussions. One thing I hear a lot from people who did not grow up in #Iowa is their discomfort with Iowans’ emphasis on how long their families have lived in Iowa.
They often see this as Iowans setting narrow parameters on who is a “real Iowan” and who is not. This is not the case at all and glosses over a fundamental misunderstanding of why my family’s Iowa longevity matters.
In the last 100 years rural America lost over 50% of its population. During the Great Depression, 1/3 of all farmers lost their farms. Most families never returned.

This Day in Labor History: August 16, 1819. British cavalry charged into a crowd of 60-80,000 workers gathered near Manchester to demand parliamentary representation and the repeal of laws making food more expensive. Let's talk about this critical event in British labor history.
In the early 19th century, democratic participation was nearly non-existent in Britain. That nation had resisted the move toward democracy spawned out of the American Revolution and French Revolution, even as those nations were also dealing with the implications of it.
Meanwhile, after the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, Britain fell into an economic depression. Unemployment rose and hordes of the new industrial workers lost their jobs and had nowhere to go. By 1819, industry was deeply affected while food prices had risen dramatically.
