The actual theme for the next five years and beyond is software, which is only in the first inning of what Marc Andreessen called "eating the world." Driving theme subcategories like crypto, cloud and cars is software, including the ability to generate a sustainable profit.

In how many significantly profitable businesses is competitive differentiation not being driven by software today? When do consumers buy hardware that is not paired with software that drives it or enabled its creation or discovery?

But some businesses just do the losing money part. A critical skill is knowing the difference between the two types.
Customer-based corporate valuation (CBCV) = valuing a business on a "bottoms up" basis by valuing the customers. In a subscription business especially, this is an essential process if you want to understand if real value is being created despite a lack of current GAAP earnings.
"CBCV isn’t about being profitable from day one. It’s about variable profitability in net present value terms (while still being mindful of fixed cost overhead of course!)" Determining whether a specific business is a delicious cheesecake or a turd requires detective work.

So the long anticipated ICO freeze is coming techcrunch.com/2017/12/12/sec… is a good example of what's here now, and what's to come. I have three thoughts on this phenomena and how it's going to shape the markets as we go forwards into the regulated portion of the blockchain's future.
The first thing is that the smart money has always known the regulators were coming. reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comm… Obama made it clear nearly two years ago. Look at the length of the Reddit thread: people knew. The President told us the way this was going to go. Don't act surprised.
The second thing is that the regulators have an *amazing* array of tools at their disposal because people have been fleecing the public for centuries. Law evolves. Securities law, insider trading, anti money laundering etc. "Token" isn't a legal category so law gets to define it!
