Apropos of nothing -- well, actually @DLeonhardt on rural decline -- I found myself thinking, why couldn't Amazon head for a less expensive city, like Philadelphia? But while Philly is cheaper, housing prices have risen just as much as NY 1/
I guess the lesson is that the problem of rising home prices blocking migration isn't just an elite-city story 2/

This is a good discussion of AOC's call for a top tax rate of 70-80%. Tl; dr: she's actually saying what top public finance economists have been saying for some time. Not at all outlandish. 1/ washingtonpost.com/business/2019/…
A small quibble is that many wealthy Americans also face state and local income taxes, and that the Diamond-Saez calculation should include sales taxes as well. My rough estimate is that high-income New Yorkers already pay 55-60% marginal rates. But her economics here is fine 2/
And let's contrast it with what everyone on the Republican side claims: that lower marginal rates on top earners have huge economic benefits. This has no basis in economic research, or in evidence 3/

Like most Jews, I’ve spent the last 24 hours in a state of despair.

I grew up in synagogues: my father was a rabbi and my mother directed a synagogue’s religious school. Though I’m not from Pittsburgh as I read the news I couldn’t help thinking of the synagogues I grew up in.
Beyond the tragedy of this attack, one of the things that has struck me is almost how unsurprising it feels. Even as the synagogue was always like a second home to me, it was also always a space that I knew was a potential target for people who hate Jews.
Despite the ridiculous, blame shifting comments about security, Jewish institutions already have high security. Having both parents working in synagogues meant that I grew up hearing about the new security measures synagogues were taking “just in case.”

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

We see you. We vote.
You had your negotiations. You held your press conference. You stood in front of #Philly and talked about your good conscience.

And when the dust settled and the cameras cleared, you went after them. Vindictively.
You figured you could appease the liberal base and seen on the side of tolerance and reform.

Clyde arrived at West Ham in 1968, the same year as Enoch Powell's 'rivers of blood' speech. He was the only - as far as I could see - visible black player in the league until Regis's emergence nine years later
