Announcing Lambda Co-op!

Starting Jan Lambda School students will spend every project week building real, production products for real companies.

Companies get products shipped faster, first-hand proof of what students can do, and first crack at hiring.

We’re moving toward a place where Lambda School students will spend 100% of their time either being introduced to new concepts or shipping real products for real companies.

Students will graduate with over six months of effective experience and code all over in great companies.
The key to making it work is minimizing the lift for companies. Training people is a hard, expensive, thing to do. We can abstract the difficult/expensive parts away and leave companies with only the benefits.

New experiment from Lambda School, coming 2019!

* Housing in downtown Salt Lake City for 1 yr

* $500/month food/living stipend for 1 yr

* 30 week full-time Lambda School course + career coaching

Cost: $0 until hired & making $50k+, then 17% of salary for 3 yrs, capped at $40k

We're forever moving to the point where anyone talented and hungry can "just show up" and we can help them get the rest of the way, all at no financial risk to the student
To be clear:

Rent is covered by Lambda. On top of Lambda covering rent we also give you $500/month to spend on food etc. The instruction and coaching is provided at no upfront cost.

All I really want in life is someone with an extraordinarily hot company to send all the VCs a deck full of cumulative graphs just to troll
You need to be like a Bird or Lime level of hot though. Every VC in the valley knows you’ll be funded by a top VC, then just cumulative graph everyone, and see who is willing to look past that and who questions your judgment from a fundamental level.

Would be interesting.
Also, I recognize it’s entirely likely that I am the only one entertained by my own thought experiments

as part of iGEM, these students were engg living cell sensors for disease diagnostics, but needed an electroporator for genetic modification. Electroporators are expensive. They cost between $2500-$10,000, and that doesn't include the cost of cuvettes, which adds up...
Instead of buying an electroporator from my start-up, I challenged us to build a frugal one - since they had come to the right place. We were the frugal lab and in the past I had invented the 20-cent paper centrifuge (paperfuge). So we set the goal to build <$1 electroporator!

Starting to think we're approaching a real breaking point in education. 15+ years of reform efforts have netted no gains in test scores, the only thing we seem to care about. On a cost-per-point basis, the US has the least cost-effective education system in the world.
It's incredibly silly to think the US can beat cram cultures like China or South Korea at the test score game, and parents watching their kids drag themselves through hours of soulless homework are starting to question whether that's the game we should care about winning.
I think if parents get more chances to see kids being generative — building real things, starting real companies, reading & theorizing w/o prompting, defining their own projects — they'll want that for their kids, despite the fear of losing the test score/college admissions race

My son started school 2001.
My first experience of school runs was a disaster. We forgot my son in school two days in a row and i said that was it. I withdrew him😂
