2018 was a year of loss & pain (I cried a lot); a year of laughter & celebration and a year of learning & growth. This week I will share some of the highs/lows, as well as opportunities & lessons. I’ll also share picture of some of the phenomenal people I have met. Thread 1:
Losing our 20 year old son to a car accident in Feb is something that we will never recover from. Getting notification that i was shortlisted for VC job just 2 days before the burial and then coming back to work to face the excruciating recruitment process was just too much!
Thank God I survived! I am grateful to all the colleagues & friends - for the hugs, encouraging messages, reassuring conversations & smiles. They helped me keep my head up. Thanks to all the very many amazing people at UCT who came through for me during my time of need 🙏🏾
Being appointed as VC of UCT was surreal. Thank you to Senate and Council for your confidence in me. The first six months were not easy, but here we are. Thank you for your support throughout, I really really appreciate it. #blessed #grateful 🙏🏾💛
Am so glad that my work with Oprah’s Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) continued this year. What makes Oprah phenomenal is the selfless work she does whether the television cameras are there or not. What she stands for, her values and ways of being inspire me to be me! 🙏🏾
Oprah unearths talent, nurtures it, grows it and affirms it. Many people recognise talent when it stands out and she sees it when it is still just potential. Thank you for being phenomenal Ms Winfrey - working with you is an honour and privilege.
Attending OWLAG graduations is a whole entire experience! A revival if you ask me! This year was no different and of course Tyler Perry was the graduation speaker. How fortunate are the OWLAG girls? Talk about Ms Winfrey’s vision! What a wow! Check this out!
Oprah introduced Tyler Perry and then he came on speak. I sat there counting my blessings, thinking about how my year started and thanking God for how it was ending. #blessed #grateful
Here is a lesson from all of this: every tough time & every pain we go through is for us. It is there not only to teach us or to make us strong but to help us recognise the strengths that we never knew we had. Don’t focus on the stress/pain, focus on the blessing. #grateful
