**Very Good Value Quotes**
Act 3 Scene 1

MACBETH: For Banquo's issue have I filed my mind.

Here's how you could use this quote in an essay:

1/
A) To show Macbeth's self-awareness. Shakespeare makes him an empathetic character for the audience by making Macbeth acutely aware of the damage he inflicts on himself through violence.

2/
B) To illustrate the play's portrayal of the effects of violence on those who commit violent acts. Macbeth's treasonous, sinful murder of Duncan causes a rupture in his own sanity and consciousness. The play is full of images of diseased and infected minds:

"A dagger of the mind" -- 2.1
"Heat-oppressed brain" -- 2.1
"Balm of hurt minds" -- 2.2
"Torture of the mind" -- 3.2
"Full of scorpions is my mind" --3.2

etc.

C) Contextually, to show the problem of insecure kingship in Macbeth's AND SHAKESPEARE'S time. Banquo is prophesied to be ultimately "happier" than Macbeth because he will be father to a line of kings. Macbeth, in contrast, will "get" none.

In Macbeth's world, the status of the monarch is severely weakened if there is no heir. Macbeth's "fruitless" reign can only end in more chaos if he dies heirless.

4 key quotes about UTTERSON. Enough for a good exam answer.

First up...

1/
"Drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages."

I think this is the best-value quote in that opening description of Utterson.

First of all let's focus on TASTE FOR VINTAGES. Utterson definitely has a TASTE for sensual pleasure: in this case fine wine.

The choice of GIN is interesting too -- I wonder if gin had the same sense in the 19thC as in the 18th...a cheap, somewhat disreputable drink associated with social problems.

So. Why are there no women in Jekyll and Hyde?

Would love to hear contributions from those more knowledgeable. But let's start with the best and most obvious answer:

Jekyll and Hyde is a story about men.

I don't just mean the characters are men. It's actually *about* the sphere of Victorian men.

Stevenson's Victorian London is a stuffy, claustrophobic web of professional men, deeply enmeshed in each other's lives but essentially unknown to each other.

Your profession and your respectability are your key to entering this world, and the price is repression. Stevenson, of course, explores the consequences of that repression.

Some of you asked about FATE. I will try to give some useful ideas on how to tackle FATE in a GCSE exam.

Here's a thesis statement you can use:

1/
Through Macbeth's character, Shakespeare presents a conflict between fate and free will. Although the exact influence of fate on Macbeth is deliberately ambiguous, overall his story is about the depth of human evil. The audience cannot attribute his actions to fate alone.

2/
Let's break it down into key quotes:
Act 1 Sc 3: BANQUO -- "To win us to our harm / The instruments of darkness tell us truths."

In other words, we can't be sure whether the witches' prophecy is really FATE, or whether it's a devilish trick to lead Macbeth into evil.

Very good point, but with a catch I will explain in the tweet below.
Now why is it that I cannot use any app across platforms and resume where I left off?

Imagine a multimodal nightmare of this, with data trailing everywhere, and me not remembering whether to move my hand or leg to perform an action.
The thing is we will obviously get standards. But if we don’t fight for open standards, we will get proprietary standards.

I've been very critical of the idea of changing Doctor Who, a character played for the last five decades by men, into a woman. So how was it, now that the time has come, we finally have a female Doctor, and the season is upon us?
Warning, this is likely to be a massive thread.
Actually, it was okay. Jody Whittaker was fine - she wasnt great, she didnt blow me away, but as a first outing in such an iconic role she did perfectly acceptably. I have no doubt that as the series progresses, she will grow into the role and make it her own.

Had another great #Macbeth rehearsal with fun language discoveries. We tackled 3.2, the pre-banquet scene. Also basically tha last scene between the two of them (other than the coda to the banquet). #shakespeare
In 3.2, Macbeth tells Lady to treat Banquo well at the feast: “present him eminence, / Both with eye and tongue”
Compare this to their first scene where Lady tells him: “Bear welcome in your eye, / Your hand, your tongue.”
