Today's #TenThings will be about HOW TO DEAL WITH NAYSAYERS, DREAMKILLERS, AND FRENEMIES WHILE WRITING. Because the moment you start telling people you're going to write your first book, WOOBOY do friends and family have thoughts that aren't helpful.
The usual vault rules apply: YMMV, my way is not the only way, everyone's situation and journey are different. This advice is meant for new and first-time writers aiming for traditional publishing.
1. 1st, permission: You don't have to tell ANYBODY that you want to write a book. Yeah, science says that part of goal setting is to engage fam and friends to make yourself accountable, but... you do you. I kept my writing a secret from all but my husband until I had a 1st draft.

For today's #TenThings post, I'm going to talk about PLOTTING YOUR FIRST NOVEL. Sure, it'll apply to later novels, but the perspective will be for someone who has never successfully completed a first draft and wants to plan ahead for success.
As always: YMMV. My way is not the only way. Your journey may be different. I can't teach to outliers. I can only speak to traditional publishing. These are tips that I use--and the actions I took that helped me with my first book. So let's go!
1. If you're writing your first book, you will greatly up your chances of finishing if you do some plotting first. I don't start writing until I know where the book begins, what the inciting incident is, what the main conflict is, what the climax is, and how it ends.

Why I Write – A Thread

My daughter asked me this the other day. I’ve long known the answer, but it’s been difficult to admit to myself.

It’s not the “artist” answer of ‘for the love of the work.’

I don’t write stories just because I love doing it.
I DO love it, but that’s not why I spend countless hours listening to characters talking in my head.

I write because I want my stories to be published. I want other people to read them.

Not just self-published but published the old fashion way, by a house and in book stores.
I self-publish books. I think it is great, particularly for non-fiction, harder with adult fiction, dependent on genre, and harder still for middle grade/children’s books.

I know a few I follow are self-publishing now or will be.

I keep thinking back to a discussion a few months on reddit about THE BELGARIAD. Several comments were made about it being cliche and pedestrian, and someone said, “Yeah, it’s a fine story, but it’s never going to be a classic.”
And all I could think to respond was, “It’s over thirty years later and we’re still talking about it. How is that NOT ‘a classic’?
But that got me thinking- I cite THE BELGARIAD (and THE MALLOREON, its sequel series) as one of my influential works. But what is that influence? I know I’ve read the whole series several times. My copies of the books are in terrible shape.

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
