In 2018 I said goodbye to my best little buddy, Mulder. Wanted to share how great a pup he was. Here we are in 2006—found him right after I got out of the Army
Mulder was a half-Corgi Hurricane Katrina rescue who I noticed at the dog shelter cuz as every dog was going nuts he was on his own, sad and sulking in a corner. Completely shy, as soon as we got in the car he climbed on my lap and stayed there the whole hour+ drive from Miami
While he eventually got over his trauma of whatever happened to him the 3 years before I found him, he always stayed glued to my side for the 12 years we were together. Never had to worry about him running away because he was always looking for me instead!
We lived in over a dozen places together, moving from Florida > LA > NYC > LA again.
Mulder had so many loving friends, and it was usually a competition for who got to dog-sit him when I was out of town. The first time I ever left him (and for a month at that) he was so sad he carried around my shoe with him wherever he want, and used it as a pillow when he slept
Mulder was very worried about me going in any body of water, and would always try to rescue me. Here he is exhausted after frantically trying to get me out of a river for an hour!
Mulder came into my life when I was a 22-year-old imploding, recent Iraq war vet. The stability and peace I got from him I wouldn’t understand til many years later, and honestly can’t imagine the roads I’d have gone down if he wasn’t holding me up with his short little legs
Mulder spent years as the greeter at the @answercoalition office in LA. He never ever barked, except at cops. He ALWAYS barked at cops. You see why I loved him...
His favorite spot, always trying to protect me, standing guard at my feet
Mulder was king of chill, just needed a few snacks and a few pals
When Mulder moved in with @AbbyMartin’s cats, he fought his impulses to eat them and adapted pretty well
Mulder had some crazy adventures in his life, especially when we packed him in an RV and hit all the national parks from Cali to Colorado
We climbed a mountain to a glacier in Colorado. He put in a heroic effort but his stubby legs got the best of him
Mulder failed Colorado but beasted Utah 👊🏽
Mulder was lost once when I was out of town! After my friend spent 10 hours searching after he fled from her dad’s house, he basically knocked on her door, which he found himself about 2 miles away (and was smart enough to go there, instead of my apartment)
Mulder’s favorite place was the beach, when he wasn’t trying to drag me out of the surf by the wrist
When we started @EmpireFiles Mulder went thru the chaos with us, constantly on the road and living in hotels working in both NY and Baltimore
Of course, Mulder was voted “Most Popular” at Corgi Beach Day!
More of Mulder hard at work in the @answercoalition office
Many animals wanted to be Mulder’s friend but he really only paid attention to me and my pals
Always well-fed
I ended up paying him to rest here, at his favorite beach, this past September.
The crazy thing about having a dog is that they are with you through so much. So many things change in a decade plus. People come and go, and the ones who stay change too. The only constant is that wagging tail that wakes you up and puts you to sleep
I’m so fortunate he stayed with me so long. He fought hard through a brain tumor all year, and even at the very end he was still himself.
We unexpectedly had a final week alone together, where we lived like we did in the early days before his family grew and he got his spot back nestled in my armpit
As hard as it was we got the best ending we could’ve hoped for—together, safe between my legs, not fully taken over by his illness but ready to go
Mulder was such a huge part of me, through such formative years, for so long—and he always will be
You’ll always be in our hearts little buddy. Rest In Peace, Mulder Prysner (2003-2018)
