Today's 1st album: Merle Haggard, A Portrait of Merle Haggard. This album has "Silver Wings," "Workin' Man Blues," and "Hungry Eyes." Astounding work. One of the greatest albums of all time.

Today's 2nd album: Blood Orange, Freetown Sound. One of the best albums of the decade.

Today's 3rd album: Sleater Kinney, All Hands on the Bad One

Today's 4th album: Lori McKenna, The Bird and the Rifle

Today's 5th album: Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room

Today's 6th album, Ibeyi, Ibeyi. One of the more interesting albums of the last few years.

Today's 7th album. Mates of State, Mountaintops. I was always amused that some hated this band because they mostly sang about how happy they were in marriage. As if rock music should only be about angst and anger.

Today's 8th album: Bill Frisell, Nashville. I happened to see him in Seattle the day before he was flying to Nashville to record this. He had most of the musicians with him. It was pretty cool to see that.

People are now pointing out the gigantic flaws in Lepore's These Truths. That there is zero on class doesn't surprise me because I don't think Lepore cares about working people or issues. But given her first book was on Native history, this is shocking.

I haven't yet read These Truths, but the summary of the reviews + all her New Yorker writing and other books suggests this is an overview of American history for Clinton-era liberals by a Clinton-era liberal.
But again, obviously I can't say too much having not read it myself.

I've seen this before at another school that I did not teach at. A historian--of American communism no less!!!--sold his soul to rise in administration, literally making his former colleagues and friends cry as he tried to fire them when they opposed his new decisions.
These people are just utter and complete cynics, people who care only about themselves and rising in higher ed administration with zero concern about the future of universities. They have no soul and should be shunned at professional conferences.

This Day in Labor History: January 11, 1968. Around 1,000 workers in Saigon walked off the job, protesting the unfair treatment they faced from South Vietnamese government and demonstrating the lack of commitment to democratic unionism from that government.
In the aftermath of the partition of Vietnam in 1954 and the cancelled elections by the United States in 1956, the nation was divided into two.
There was a ton of tension in the South between the government in Saigon and the countryside that largely wanted reunification with North Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh’s leadership, although opposition to Saigon was actually quite complicated and multifaceted.

James Brown was already The Godfather of Soul when he dropped proto-funk classic Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag, but it was really two years later when he gives you funk fully formed. Props to Pee Wee Ellis and the legend Clyde Stubblefield

“Cold Sweat” has that stank. Funky.
Funk has roots in southern soul and I think the original Bar-Kays epitomize/embody that. The first generation dropped "Soul Finger" in 67. Most of this lineup would tragically die w/Otis Redding that Dec, but the band would be a funk mainstay for decades.

And The Meters are another band that forged funk in the late 60s. Pure New Orleans. Art Neville deserves all the props. One of the tightest bands ever. Zigaboo’s drumming 🔥

Today in pulp - as it's #NationalAlbumDay - I'm looking back at one of the greatest albums of all time.

What are the chances...
By 1976 Jeff Wayne was already a successful composer and musician, as well as a producer for David Essex. His next plan was to compose a concept album.
War Of The Worlds was already a well known story, notorious due to the Orson Wells radio play production. For Wayne it seemed like a great choice for a rock opera.

Our home in the hills was beauty untold; no fear, no angst, no daggers of night as the moon reflected her glow.

The day of fright ended our peace. Vespers of violence, sirens of screams and last but NEVER least; the witches who watched deciding who went below.
