The dogmatic belief among many centrist pundits that soaking the rich is *unpopular* with voters is just baffling to me, given what the polling shows.

Two polls conducted a year apart with completely different question wordings show slightly different levels of support for legalization in New York (62% vs 56%) and this is how the nation's leading anti-legalization group tries to frame it.
The problem for opponents of marijuana commercialization: there is no institutional voice making a sensible, evidence-based case for the workable alternatives.
The money opposed to legalization is going to people and groups rooted in an 80s/90s mindset, which has really been a gift for legalization: compared to that, commercial legalization is completely reasonable.

The core of the Green New Deal - a huge industrial policy push for green energy that will also directly employ a lot of working-class Americans - is a very centrist idea, and not a new idea by any means.
That core idea is a GREAT one. And we absolutely NEED to do it.

But I think we shouldn't package that core idea with pie-in-the-sky income redistribution that has little to do with climate change:

Also note that the Green New Deal has a little-discussed third idea - environmental justice - which is REALLY important, and is the single most under-emphasized idea on the left today.

Let's talk about some mistaken assumptions about decentralization that led to the blockchain hype, and what we can learn from them.
(For context, I think the technology is sound, interesting and important from a CS perspective. That’s why I’ve been researching and teaching it since 2013. bitcoinbook.cs.princeton.edu But I’ve also been speaking/writing about the pitfalls of decentralization for ~10 years.)
Blockchain proponents have a vision of _society_ in which centralized entities are weakened/eliminated. But blockchain tech is a way to build _software_ without centralized servers. Why would the latter enable the former? It’s a leap of logic that’s left unexplained.

As Ritholtz says, the reality is now clear: there has been no visible hit to employment in the restaurant sector, where you'd expect to see one if anywhere 2/
Furthermore, this is no surprise: at this point there's a large body of research on the effects of minimum wage hikes, which shows little if any employment effect in the U.S. context. This literature is very solid, because state actions provide natural experiments 3/
