I've been thinking of the B in Peter B. Parker as "Bum" but it occurred to me it's just as much Peter "Burnout" Parker. #SpiderVerse
No wonder older millennials relate to him so hard. A generation of very smart kids who tried so hard and got our asses kicked by life and are just so so tired.
I keep thinking about that 5 second montage of him getting injured over and over again AFTER his divorce and like, you know he probably doesn't have insurance or a very good plan and even spider powers don't perfectly heal everything and SO RELATABLE.
There's something really subtle in the way that after his personal life went to shit he STILL kept on being Spider-Man, even if he stopped caring about caring for himself.
I think we've all had burnout before where we are still limping along. Like we can't stop entirely, so most people assume we're not burned out at all.
Also the mix of "Do NOT look to me as a mentor, kid" to "God, the next generation is doing alright" to "I'm going to take this burden on for you" to "I don't know if I can take my own advice" is just... RE LA TA BLE
And what's so incredible about the movie is that while it gives us this relatable Peter, the kids (and also us who remember being kids) have Miles and Gwen and their very relatable, earnest points of view as good kids who have this responsibility and opportunity to do good.
Miles as Gen Z: "I have the power to help people and do good!"
Peter B as old Millennials: *drags metaphorical cigarette* "Oh you sweet summer child"
"My life is pain and disappointment and bad knees." - Peter B Parker, probably
And at the same time, it only takes a little time for Peter B to feel his hope coming back. Even in the face of literal obliteration, just a glimmer of hope from a kid sparks his determination to do right. Which again, is super freaking relatable to me.
Peter B could have been a completely bitter selfish sadsack (which he's been in some of his comics, too) and would have made me frustrated if not for the film giving his flaws and strengths nuance even within the jokes. What a good movie!!
