“Wet’suwet’en conflict echoes bitter oilsands battles — only this time it’s natural gas”...& people are just figuring this out? What we are saying is no expansion of oil AND gas infrastructure or production. Thread 1/ business.financialpost.com/wcm/2f1e23da-2…
Of course these battles are connected. Along w/ Energy East & Northern Gateway & KXL & many more around the world. We are not saying shut down oil and gas overnight. But consistently in all of these places people are rising up and saying no new expansion of fossil fuels #cdnpoli
New oil and gas projects, in fact any expansion, is inconsistent with a climate safe world of below two degrees. That’s clear in the @IPCC_CH report and it’s clear from analysis of even Canada’s weak targets #cdnpoli #abpoli #bcpoli stand.earth/latest/canada-…
And in each of these battlegrounds there are indigenous peoples standing up to protect their rights and territories and the climate. In each of these projects scientists have clearly stated that there are significant risks to air, water, biodiversity and the climate.
In the past it was about reviewing project by project but as we have now surpassed capacity for how much cumulative industrial damage can be absorbed by natural ecosystems and still ensure human wellbeing - we need to look at the sector as a whole and stop EXPANSION
Luckily we now have technologies at scale to transition fossil fuel energy needs with efficiency, renewables and electrification of transport. Not for all needs yet but for the majority and it is looking good even for the most stuck needs.
We have to do this and in fact our country has committed to it by 2050. So why are we building more fossil fuel infrastructure when we have committed to phase it out. It’s like saying we are going to ban DDT and also build new factories to make more of it?
Politicians are making the argument that gas is different because it will replace coal but there is already enough gas globally, more expansion wis inconsistent with staying below 2 degrees & increasingly new gas is competing with and displacing renewables that could replace coal
Yes these protests are connected and there is more to come as the fires and floods and droughts spread and people wake up the moment we are living in. @IPCC_CH says we have 12 years to turn things around and reduce emissions...you don’t reduce by building more.
This is why the worlds leading economists are calling for no new investment in oil and gas notapennymore.info/declaration/
It’s why hundreds of organizations from over 40 countries are calling for no expansion of oil and gas projects, pipelines or any infrastructure lofotendeclaration.org
So, yes the battles over gas pipelines & oilsands expansion & oilsands pipelines is connected. It’s connected in the hearts & minds & organizing of those of us working for cleaner, safer energy systems, indigenous rights and a safe climate.
It’s connected for those of us who believe Canada can do better. That we will step up to the challenge ahead of building a clean economy that priorities people over polluters. That we will be a country that leads and problem solves in difficult times.
That we can be a country that plans for a just transition for fossil fuel workers, strengthens new exciting industries, clean tech, high tech, AI etc and lifts up our film, tourism, agriculture and more.
That we can be a country that grapples w/ reconciliation in a way that ensures we don’t just cut deals or take indigenous nations to court but we learn from them and are willing to both address past injustice and adopt our planning and process so we learn from indigenous nations
The real issues this year are not just carbon pricing, despite the toxic polarized debate that the Conservatives and Liberals are building for this election. Carbon pricing is important but is too little too late for our economy and our climate. It is the floor not the ceiling.
